Im talking ecumenical meetings. I know they have one coming up as mentioned.

JL: Bind as define a dogma that must be held by the whole Church such as the Ecumenical Council of Nicaea.
If you don’t mind me asking, what does JL mean? I’ve never seen that abbreviation before.

Yes, there is such an authority, an Ecumenical Council. Andrew (Harpazo) explained it all in great detail here.

JL: jl are my initials. The Last Ecumenical Council for Catholics in union with the see of St Peter was Vatican II. What was the last Ecumenical Council for the national Orthodox Communities?

The last council defined as Ecumenical was 787.

JL: So the Orthodox has not held an Ecumenical Council since 787, why?
Has there been a need?

Don’t get me wrong - we’ve had councils. We’ve dealt with local issues, even global issues. We have not had any need to repudiate a heresy. That’s the point of an Ecumenical Council.

Not really. If there’s no need to call such a council, they don’t call the council. They haven’t seen the need since 787. Sounds like that saying fits perfectly.

781???😃 Was that 1781 or 781? No wonder why its was called the Catholic Conscious in that article. 👍

God Bless, Gary

JL: Well that’s a dodge if I have ever seen one.
What needed fixing? Our faith is the same as it was then, unchanging just like Christ. 🙂 We don’t just hold a council because we feel like it. There must be a purpose and a need. There hasn’t been one in a while.

Like Rawb said, there have been local councils and things of that nature to sort of matters of local problems, but thanks be to God, we haven’t had issues on a global scale since iconoclasm (though you probably could argue some minor issues in our modern times) that the Church had to speak out against. I’m sorry if you don’t like it, but that’s the reality of it.

In Christ,
Andrew

JL: I respect the EO and don’t want to offend, but I think we know that EO has no authority to define or bind apart from the see of St Peter.

Well, there was that council in 879 where we condemned the filioque, as did the pope of Rome. 😉

Why not just say this, then, instead of asking why there hasn’t been a council?
