Why have so many people jumped on the band wagon for the ‘end of times’?

is there some purpose or actual reason behind this?

Hoping that the coming of Jesus will be in their lifetime? Unlike their grandpa or grandma or anyone else they don’t even have information about that is related to them? Because a day can mean something else to God? Because people really really think they are special and somehow more special than all those that lived after Jesus rose again?

It’s exciting.🤷

It’s easier to get caught up in the emotions of a scary prediction than to stand your ground in a calm, logical, collected manner.

For some it pays too.

Christians in the New Testament were always expecting the imminent return of Christ.
Code:
"No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come." (NIV, Mark 13:32-33)

So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him. (NIV, Matthew 24:43-44)
Matthew 16:27-28 (Words of Jesus in red)

27 “For the Son of Man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay everyone for what has been done. 28 Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

2 Peter 3:

10But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and everything that is done on it will be disclosed. 11Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought you to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness, 12waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire? 13But, in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home. 14Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish;

Matthew 24:42-51 (Words of Jesus in red)

42 Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. 43 But understand this: if the owner of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.

The people with these predictions are just trying to grab people’s attention. Most people would be interested in knowing when the end was coming so it’s always an eye opener when someone comes along every 3or 4 yrs. and predicts the last days are upon us.its been going on fjor centuries now and it will continue to go on.It makes for a good story to tell how theere has been an increase in tornadoes, flood, earthquakes, ect.

I have found it more practical, to focus my concern on my own personal “end time” as in - I have no idea whether I will make it through tomorrow (or even today). God calls us “Home” as He sees fit .

I try to first interpret our Blessed Lord’s words posted by firstmode, as they might apply to me : The Son of Man may well be coming for me personally at an hour I do not expect… That would make it a good idea for me to keep awake

There is nothing wrong with desiring out of love that our Blessed Lord should return in glory - it’s part of our faith. We could be reminded that we actually pray for this during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass directly following the consecration/transubstantiation, when we proclaim :

Dying you destroyed our death,
rising you restored our life.
Lord Jesus, come in glory .

Where it begins to become distorted, is when someone might wish that our Lord would return so that evildoers may get what’s coming to them. Another distortion is the hording of food and water. (My own hope is that I might have the privilege of receiving the sacrament of Reconciliation in the vicinity of just a little before our Blessed Lord cals me “Home”).

All that being said, as Christians we are not supposed to be oblivious to what is taking place all around us in the world. In this sense, I’ve always found Luke 29: 28-31 [NAB] to provide very sobering food for thought:

Jesus turned to them and said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep instead for yourselves and for your children, for indeed, the days are coming when people will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed.’

At that time people will say to the mountains, ‘Fall upon us!’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us!’
for if these things are done when the wood is green what will happen when it is dry?"

:hmmm:

All of these quotes are very true and should be heeded, but the fact is the Son of Man’s coming will be unexpected, as you have quoted, and we have no business trying to predict exactly when it will come. That is directly against the Word of God and is disobedience to the Word. This current business of May 21 being the date of Christ’s coming is a prime example of someone in disobedience to the Word and a false prophet. We need to pray for our deceived brothers and sisters.

From the Nicean Creed

And I look for the resurrection of the dead. And the life of the world to come.

Thank you for reminding us! What a happy happy thought.

I’m kind of hoping the world will end on Saturday. Work is a drag lately.

Hoping and wishing will make it true of course. Loved one dies, so therefore afterlife is very possible, no more than that. It just must be because I want it to be.

maybe like me they are just hoping they won’t have to do the laundry and deferred housework this weekend, much less tackle their taxes on which they filed an extension

People have a need to make sense out of chaotic and troubling times. There have been a lot of hugely publicized natural disasters, there is political and economic turbulence, moral standards have declined. People are looking for a way out of their troubles. And, Protestants have misinterpreted Revelation.

This kind of thing reminds me of a fable told by some historically famous person or other.
It goes like this:

The people of Alexandria awoke one morning to find their city surrounded by a beseiging army of Huns. The Huns threatened every kind of destruction and mayhem that could be imagined, and the people were scared. But the city held.

The Huns tried to set fire to the city walls but, being of solid stone, they held.

The Huns tried to starve them out, but the stores of food and water were adequate and the city held.

Finally, one day, the Huns simply gave it up and moved away, and the people were terribly disappointed that the Huns gave up their plan of mayhem.

It would have been better than nothing.

Sometimes, in short, it seems to me people delight in such things as predictions of disaster out of sheer ennui.

You have me stuck on the fence with that one Cat …

First, I was thinking, maybe it would have had to happen before sundown Saturday (almost that time here at the moment) because God would be resting on the Sabbath …:hmmm: … but then I thought maybe the “END” might mean the end to His work too … allowing the possibility that it could happen before sundown on Saturday …:hmmm:

… Finally, referring to scripture, there is a good chance that at that point in history, the sun, as we know it, will be no more anyway… So … Do you think it would help if we all make sure to keep fresh batteries in our watches ?

🙂

I agree with what you said. This old man is now famous. He made the front page of the USA Today and was on CNN.com for a week. All for acting like a fool
