Old Testament prophesy stating that Levitical priests will never cease offering sacrifice:
“For thus says the Lord: David shall never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel, and the Levitical priests shall never lack a man in my presence to offer burnt offerings, to burn cereal offerings, and to make sacrifices forever. The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: Thus says the Lord: If you can break my covenant with the day and my covenant with the night, so that day and night will not come at their appointed time, then also my covenant with David my servant may be broken, so that he shall not have a son to reign on his throne, and my covenant with the Levitical priests my ministers. As the host of heaven cannot be numbered and the sands of the sea cannot be measured, so I will multiply the descendants of David my servant, and the Levitical priests who minister to me.” Jer. 33
Levitical priesthood of Judaism cannot fulfill this prophecy. The Old Testament also prophesies that God had intention to extend the Levitical priesthood to include non-Jewish people which meant it would no longer be hereditary. Isaiah 66 describes the prophecy that God will gather all nations and tongues to see His glory, and then says:
*“And some of them also I will take for priests and for Levites, says the Lord.” Isaiah 66:21 *
Where does Jeremiah 33:17-22 and Isaiah 66:21 find its fulfillment if not in the ministerial priesthood?
They do not apply to the High Priesthood of Christ alone, because the prophecy says priests (plural) - and furthermore, according to Hebrews 7:17, Christs priesthood is not Levitical, but of Melchizedek.
To Christians in the New Testament times, the title “priests” belonged to Levitical priests only. Only after the destruction of Jerusalem temple (70 AD) - and after Christianity broke away from Judaism, (both happened after New Testament times) - was the title priest properly applied to bishops and presbyters, as testified by the writings of the Early Church Fathers. The earliest reference to the three-level priesthood (High priest, priests and Levites) among Christians was recorded in the 1 Clement (written 96 AD); Clement was a disciple of the apostle Peter, so he should know the truth better than us:
“Those, therefore, who present their offerings at the appointed times, are accepted and blessed; for inasmuch as they follow the laws of the Lord, they sin not. For his peculiar are assigned to the high priest, and their own proper place is prescribed to the priests, and their own special ministrations devolve on the Levites. The layman is bound only by the laws that pertain to laymen.” 1 Clement Chapter 40
