If we consider that a “graven image” is simply a material thing through which God is worshipped and the saints are venerated, then our primary example of the use of a material image to foster veneration is God’s own choice to have his Son enter the world as a human being with a material human body:
He [Christ] is the image of the invisible God, the first-born of all creation … For in him all the fulness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross
(Col. 1:15, 19-20).
