Why is it that churches have quit having the rosary prayer at church? It is so very sad, no churches near me have any listings for when the rosary is. I could look up it up on masstimes.org, but none are listed. Tried going to each churches websites- no rosary listed on calendar, just mass times and adoration. A church near me use to have it daily at 5pm- granted, few attended, but still- to do away with it?

It is good to encourage the Rosary so why don’t you start a group or put the idea forward to someone in the parish?

🙂

My parish has at least three or more rosary groups that I can think of offhand. One meets in parishioners’ homes, two meet in the church on particular days. And on most weekend Masses, there is a rosary recited before Mass. One would not find these in the bulletin, though the listing of the prayer groups would be listed on the website, I think.

We didn’t have recitation of the rosary at our parish for years. And as I returned to the Catholic Church there, I didn’t really realize what was missing. (I was raised in a very anti Catholic home and joined when I was a senior in high school)

Anyway, when a very traditional active family moved into our parish and didn’t find these things, they started them up with permission from our Lay Ecclesial Minister. They started rosary recitation even when it was just their family for awhile. They also started Adoration for one hour every week.
I think that the laity have to lead out in these things if we want them to be a part of our religious experience. They are a beautiful part of our Catholic heritage and it is a shame to let them fall by the wayside. Even our Pope spoke out in a post I read recently;

***"Visiting Naples in March, Pope Francis told priests, nuns, and seminarians that one way to make sure Jesus is the center of their lives is to ask “his mother to take you to him A priest, a brother, a nun who does not love Mary, who does not pray to her — I would even say one who does not recite the rosary — well, if you don’t love the mother, the mother will not give you the Son.”

The rosary is needed in the church, why have people abandoned it? 🤷

You can be the one who starts the ministry in your parish!

I don’t know the rules at your church, but generally to have a successful ministry of this type you need minimum of three committed people (five is better) . This will insure that there will be at least two there to open, close, lead the prayers.

These people would ideally be members of the parish that would be trusted with keys/security codes, turning heat on and off, etc.

Often times people don’t realize that it takes a core of committed people who covenant to be there, and take responsibility for the practical issues. And it’s wonderful if there are others who will agree to step up in the event of illness, bad weather, or other situations arise.

The simplest way to do it is often immediately prior to or following a Mass, but with a group of committed regulars any time is possible.

Speak to your pastor about the logistics of starting a ministry in the parish.

We didn’t have it at all.
So we asked, in the parish news letter if it would be more better for them to have the Rosary before or after Mass, most said it would suit them to have it before Mass,
It is now prayed 20 mins before each Mass.

The Rosary just needs to be organised by one person, and the rest are happy
to attend and to Pray it. (that’s what we found anyway).

So just float the idea and then start it, it will grow from there.

In my parish the Rosary is recited every day before each of the morning Masses. We also have a Monday & Friday evening Prayer Group which has Exposition & recitation on the Rosary.

That’s good advice.👍

Who says people have abandoned it? 🤷

At my parish, the rosary is prayed after the 6:30 am mass, and before the 8:00 am mass every week day. In May and October, it is prayed before every Sunday mass as well, often led by some of the teenagers in our parish. If there is a particular need (e.g., when our pastor was having back surgery, when asked for increased prayers by the archbishop), we’ll pray the rosary before Sunday masses in other months as well.

We also have groups of parishioners who pray the rosary on certain days in the adoration chapel for particular needs (e.g., family members who have left the faith, increase in vocations). I’ve prayed the rosary over the phone with friends when serious needs arose (e.g., when a friend’s husband walked out on her).

And at the end of our religious education classes, all the classes gather in the church and pray a decade of the rosary together.

MANY of our young people have embraced this devotion with fervor! Just because ONE person on the internet can’t find times listed for when parishes pray the rosary communally (none of ours are listed on our website!), doesn’t mean that the practice has been universally abandoned! Far from it!

God bless you!

  1. the Rosary devotion isn’t always in Masstimes.org
  2. believe it or not, sometimes the Rosary isn’t always in the bulletins either.
For example, my Parish does the Rosary every day before one of the daily Masses and also on Monday nights and another weekday afternoon (forget which day). But for whatever reason, the morning one isn’t in the bulletin because it’s done by daily mass attenders, without being an “official ministry offering”

Another parish by my office has it every evening after their 5:15 daily mass

If you want the Rosary, just organize it. Once you start it, I’m sure others will keep it going if it’s at a good time (like 20 mins before or right after a daily mass)

God Bless

I say the Rosary every day – my granddaughter was studying in Paris, France and she sent me a BEAUTIFUL rosary-- I say the first two decades with my first cup of coffee – the next two I say when I’m walking to public transportation or to Mass---- or to the local Walgreen’s – and the last decade I say before I turn out the light at night. I Icouldn’t get through the day without saying my rosary!!

Before I moved to where I am now, most of the parishioners stayed for a Rosary after weekday mass.

Where I live now my parish has a Rosary after weekday mass.

Occasionally I go to different parishes for weekday mass, and they have a Rosary said before mass begins.

Many of the parishes have the Five First Saturdays promoted by Our Lady at Fatima, and the Rosary prior to Mass is well attended.

I have about six or seven ladies over to my home every Monday and we pray the Scriptural Rosary, and other prayers for about fifty minutes. Then we have a cup of coffee and chat for about the same amount of time.

Another lady with a much larger house than mine has about fifteen attending her Scriptural Rosary and other prayers also, then a social time, once a month.

So I’d say the Rosary is very much prayed. It is prayed outside of the abortion clinic as well. And we get news of when women change their mind about going in.

This brings back a special memory. I was in a parish where a group of ladies said the rosary every day after Mass. They would come together in a few pews after Mass – and that process gave time for those who stayed after Mass for their own private thanksgiving to finish in peace – and then the ladies would start and anyone was welcomed to pray with them. The numbers varied but there was a solid core group.

I was delighted every occasion I could join them but they animated it themselves and alternated the decades among themselves. They always added at the end the Memorare and the Prayer of Saint Michael and a prayer for vocations.

That was years ago. In my heart, I always thought that little informal group over the years was responsible in part for several vocations to the priesthood and religious life – and it gave a special service to the parish by faithfully reciting publicly that prayer.

Some parishes do have the rosary prayed in the church but they just don’t publicize it. I know several parishes in my area where the rosary is said before the Mass every day.

I’ve been to many parishes where the faithful prayed the Rosary together before daily Mass. It was never publicized in calendars or bulletins or the like, but rather simply seemed an informal and spontaneous thing that they started doing which continued over time. You’ll never know if anyone does that at any parish unless you go and find out.

You could introduce the Rosary beginning with this coming Sunday?! 😉

(acnuk.org/one-million-children-praying-the-rosary).

In my parish and many more, an unofficial group of people recite the Rosary about 20 minutes before mass everyday. Maybe people do it around you, just not published.

In my own parish, they say the Rosary before every weekday Mass and say the Divine Mercy after every weekday Mass. They also have a Rosary recitation Thursday evenings.

You could ask the parish secretary if there is a Rosary recitation in the parish that isn’t in the bulletin. If not, consider starting one yourself. Other people would likely be very grateful.
