Where is Heaven? What Mormons believe about Heaven

I received a question earlier this week that said this:

Do you understand where Heaven is, can you draw me a map to it? Do you fully understand the location of Heaven?

So, I’ve decided to start a thread about Mormon (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) beliefs about heaven. It really is a fascinating subject.

Let me start by quoting our Savior Jesus Christ:

1 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:
2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. (Matthew 5:1-5)

For those of you who are not caught up on your studies, this quotation is from the famous Sermon on the Mount. The principles taught in this sermon could, of course, fill volumes (and they have). But notice the fifth verse. What does it mean that the meek will inherit the earth?

I submit to you (and this is the Mormon doctrine) that after Christ comes again, the earth will be glorified and sanctified by the power of God. Then it will become a Celestial Kingdom or Heaven for God’s righteous children.

The Book of Revelation has this to say about it:

1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.
4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

9 And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb’s wife.
10 And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,
11 Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal;
12 And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel:

21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass.
22 And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.
23 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.

27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life. (Revelation 21)

So, where is heaven? I’m not sure, but it will be right here.

This goes directly to the greatest commandment of all.

A new heaven and new earth describes a rebirth, the one that occurred with the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. His bride, the New Jerusalem, is a symbol of the Church.

22 I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God almighty and the Lamb. 23 The city had no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gave it light, and its lamp was the Lamb. 24 The nations will walk by its light, and to it the kings of the earth will bring their treasure. 25 During the day its gates will never be shut, and there will be no night there. 26 The treasure and wealth of the nations will be brought there, 27 but nothing unclean will enter it, nor any (one) who does abominable things or tells lies. Only those will enter whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

Repent and be baptized.

How cool that we agree on this one! I really didn’t know that Catholics thought the earth was going to become as heaven.
