I must apologize if this isn’t in the right forum. Someone I work with and I had this discussion the other day about the presence of the Lord in our lives. She said that because Jesus was human He couldn’t be everywhere. Only God could . I feel that Jesus IS everywhere. Anyway, it made me think and I wondered if someone mught be able to help this “revert”

Kathy, the definite answer can be noted in that the presence of the risen Christ is in the Eucharist. Christ is present in other ways yet we always know that one place where we can find Jesus, without question.

The person you work with does not appear to believe that Jesus is God! Jesus has two natures - human and divine. He is God the Son, Second Person of the Blessed Trinity - of course he is everywhere.

Jesus is wherever two or three gather in His name.

Jesus is in the least of your brethren, who need food and drink, clothing and shelter.

Jesus is with us until the end of time.

I concur. Ask this person if they believe Jesus is God. If so, then ask “where is God?”. This should lead to everywhere everywhen.

If my rusty brain remembers correctly, Father Hardon says that Jesus is present everywhere as God, but is not present everywhere as the God-Man. As God-Man, Jesus is present in as the Risen Christ at the right hand of God the Father in Heaven and is present as the Risen Christ in the Eucharist. Christ is present everywhere else as the One God in the Second Person of the Holy Trinity.

The Baltimore 3 Catechism and Mass by Father Connell says on page 13:
“Q: What do we mean when we say God is all-present?
A: When we say that God is all-present we mean that He is everywhere.
a) God is everywhere:
first, by His power, inasmuch as all things are under His dominion;
second, by His Presence, in as much as nothing is hidden from Him;
third, by His Essence, inasmuch as he is in all things as the cause of their being.
Scripture reference:
“Whither may I go from thy spirit, or whither may I flee from thy face? If I ascend into heaven, thou are there; if I lie down with the dead, thou are present. If I lay hold of the wings of the dawn, if I dwell in the farthest part of the sea: Even there thy hand lead my, and thy right hand hold me”(Psalm 138:7-10 Douay Rheims version, Psalm 139: 7-10 NAB version).”

Father Hardon also mentions, if memory serves correctly, that God didn’t break off pieces of Himself into his creation—a distinction from Pantheism which teaches God is literally in all things. Such a notion is absurd, for if God were literally in all things then it would be appropriate for us to give divine honors, to worship and to provide sacrifice in honor of our telephones, for example. Pantheistic beliefs easily lead to literal forms of idolatry, and we should always highight this distinction when teaching about God’s Omniprescience.

Hope this helps in your evangelization to your miguided friend.

God Bless!

PS. If I’m wrong, please correct me!

I don’t know. Sure Jesus is everywhere but I have never been able to shed the childish notion that Jesus is more some places than others.

When I was a kid I had to take my hat off when I walked by a church. I still have that foolish reflex. I never get undressed in my bedroom because I have a crucifix over my bed and I don’t want Jesus to have to watch that. I had to move my Sacred Heart picture out of the kitchen because I swear too much there. I’m 46 years old now and I know it is ridiculous. Does anybody else still do this stuff?
