Patrick, this is pretty much what the book I referenced above said. So, after reading the book, I, like the author of your Crisis magazine article say: Credo. I believe.

Axum - the Ethiopian Church claim that they are in possesion of the Ark of the Covenant and have it in the ancient city of Axum.

The building in which they say it is housed is the fourth picture down on this link with a little story above the pic…

Am I alone in finding it inconsistent that a religion that makes such elaborate reliquaries for the relics of saints and considers them incredibly important would not have made the Ark of the Covenant into a major pilgrimage site rather something one would have to stumble across in an obscure place?

I hear you Karen, although I’m Catholic I’m highly skeptical of relics and artifacts and the secrecy surrounding many of them, if faith dictates their authenticity then no one should have a problem subjecting them to scientific scrutiny.

That being said: I remember a story a nun told us in Catholic school, (I was in grammar school, so some of the details are vague) That in recent times a university team decided to build an exact replica of the Ark of the Covenant, detailed information is in the OT and the team built an Ark to exact specifications. The result was that the replica gave off so much radioactivity that it had to be quickly destroyed. I thought this was a way-cool story and it stuck with me ever since

Urban legend? Possibly. Can anyone out in CAF confirm or refute this story?

The point is, maybe “they” are keeping it hidden for a reason.

Also, from what I understand many artifacts and sacred items were hidden in Ethiopia secretly to protect them from plundering during unstable political events. obscure was deliberate and makes sense to me.

Hi Mr. Bee -

Secret? How many relics are kept secret? All Catholic relics are open to the public and are on display. The Ark is the only perported one I know of and it is not “secret”, it is meerly not accessible. However, I do share your skeptiscism of the Ethiopian story.

But it does beg the question, “Why would the Ethiopans lie?”

Do you know of any other secret relics? Please show us.

(A sly trick on my part. If any relics are secret, Mr. Bee, you could not have knowledge of them because they are secret!) 😃

I affirm that the Ethiopians claim that they are in possession of the Ark.

The only ones who say that the Ark is in the Ethiopian church are the Ethiopians. No one else has had access to it to confirm or deny anything is even in the church, including CAF members.

But again, why lie? What would be the point or motive? What reason could they possibly have?

Subrosa,

😃 Ha ha, you got me good. I know of no secret relics, Or at least I wouldn’t tell you😉

I guess what I was trying to say is that there is a shroud (no pun intended) of mystery surrounding many relics. yet I can understand not wanting a bunch of numskulls doing destructive tests on artifacts. It’s just that I really want to know if they’re authentic or not, show me the Ark so I can decide for myself.

Even then, all these discoveries remain frustratingly inconclusive.

Just to clarify,
As far as the urban legend was concerned, I was asking if any CAF members knew of the “Ark replica” story I heard in 5th grade (see above post).

I don’t that’s the first time I’ve heard anything like that…

Good point.
And even if the “bunch of numskulls” were allowed access to it for testing, we’d end up with the same nay sayers that we have for the shroud itself.
A, you lose, B, you lose.

I don’t know actually whether the Ethiopians have the real Ark or not, but it seems they believe in it so that they speak of it matter-of-factly.

Just as that man in the article I linked above said:
“You may choose to disbelieve that we have the Ark here,” he said. “That is your choice. But we know better. For us, it is a fact.”
