Redemptionis Sacramentum 48-50: :

See also Summa Theologica Third Part, Question 74, Articles 1 through 8: Whether this sacrament ought to be made of unleavened bread?
Unfortunately, you’ve mistaken instructions that deal with liceity (what the priest is permitted to do without breaking the rules) with proclamations governing validity (whether the consecration actually takes place).

Here’s my little project for you:
  1. Grab your 1962 Missal and open it.
  2. Somewhere toward the front you should find De Defectibus, put there by Pius V’s orders in 1570.
  3. Read paragraph 5 (I think that’s the number) dealing with the validity of using leavened bread.
  4. Report back to us what you find out, and let us know if you think De Defectibus was in error somehow.

You are right, I misunderstood. The validity deals with the percentages of the “additional” ingredients (over 50%) as well as, I believe, whether or not wheat is used. In any event, I still do maintain that the validity of the consecration in the photos is, at the very least, suspect. Obviously, we don’t have an ingredient list but the present of one fairly blatant abuse is enough to raise one’s suspicion that other more serious (read: invalidating) abuses exist.

See, I can admit when I make a mistake - there is no need to be snide about it. 👍

I wasn’t trying to be snide, but the whole thing had been discussed above already with the correct answer given, the explanation provided for seemingly contrary language in the canon law, and multiple references supplied which you didn’t seem to have availed yourself of. Sorry if I came off snippy because of that. 🙂

For the* Western Latin Rite Catholic Church*, valid matter consists of wheat unleavened bread and grape wine.

The Eastern Rites have different rules and they are not what is being discussed here as it was not Eastern Rites that were being represented in the photos in question. My apologies if my post confused you.
Your post was in error, not mine. Leavened bread is valid but illicit in the Roman Church.

wisdomseeker**** I was apalled by the pictures. Talk about the majesty and the blasphemy. Glad you let us know they are recent images. Please send more as you come upon them. If I were you, I would send them directly to the Pope: benedettoxvi@vatican.va
and it gets worse. this portuguese website is a site where people go to complain and ask questions to this professor who is fighting for the Church. this professor is being horrible persectude by bishops and priests for defending the True Faith.

there are people complaining that some priest have declared in the Church that they no longer are doing the Eucharist and he serves bread and grape juice.

this is not something of the 70s or 80s, i was in Brasil then and never saw such thing. the Church back then was still intact and reverent. this is something that started by the
90s and it is getting worse now and days.
the Latin Mass is something of the Past. it has been complete forbidden by the bishops and forgotten.
we are being punished by what happened to the Mass. we should have never touch the Worship of God. it should have never been changed. we can understand why people sin, i can live with that but to disrespect the Worship to God it is bringing a course upon ourselves.

At least a couple of those photos looked like attempts to consecrate loaves (or chunks of loaves) of bread? In such a case, the consecration would have been invalid (invalid matter).

I feel sorry for the laity who are being duped by these things, especially if they have nowhere else to go. 😦 It would be advisable if the OP knows of these incidents personally, to forward them directly to Rome.
the abuses are horrifying. these people are coming to this website to report what is going on in their parish and they are confused. there are priests changing the words of consecration to mantra and condoble prayers.

there are priests consegrating the Bread together with the laity. there are laity consecrating the bread and purifying the Vessels while the priest sits on the side.

it is so much more. these people are begging for help to save the Church. they say the Church is bleeding.

If you look at the writings of St. Justin the Martyr, the current Ordinary Form takes several queues from it. This is not counting the fact that Pope Paul VI and several others within the Magisteruim developed what we know now as the Ordinary Form, which is the same Rite as the EF. To slander one is to slander both.

Are thee abuses? Yes. There are abuses in both Forms, always has been. If you think what is now known as the EF has been abuse free all of these years you are sadly mistaken, it’s just back then we didn’t have message boards to post on and the Internet to share information quickly. You, and others, lose a lot of credibility when you do this.

With the way you’re grossly generalizing things with terms such as “curse” and “disrespect” you’re as much as a heretic as those in the photos, just for different reasons.

Technicolour fringed stoles? Green and white checkerboard stoles?

And am I to understand he put our Lord in plastic and glass?
yes, this bishop apparently is encouraging priests to be a cultural priest. wear clothe that matches the culture of the place they are in. very sad. these are what the people are complaining about and also the total disregard for the House of God. there is one in which they are using the table for a game of bingo.

These pictures are horrifying. These “priests” should be laicized immediately. How tragic that many in Brazil are being led astray.
as one can see these priests are new priests. it is almost hopeless for the people.

I will let this one pass. it is evident that we dissagree on this. i notice you are a franciscan. the franciscans in my part of town are doing just that. they are sitting on the side and letting women take over the Altar and Tabernacle, guitar Mass, instead of the homily they call the laity to give testimony. just like in teh protestant churches. they like to mention protestants, how good they are, but never mention one Saint of the Catholic Church. it is almost like they have created a new church for themselves. their teachings of the Catechism is very poor and people leave complete ignorant of their Faith. i have been there and seen. They have an aversion to the Latin Mass. believe me i dont wonder why.

It is terrifying.

this letter, if anyone knows portuguese, is from a parishoner who are horrifyed by a priest. just look at the date.

any way, this priest, is coursing the CC, and praising Mluther for freeing them from the ditartorship of the pope. all this because the parishoner sent him the website showing the changes that the pope is making in the Church. this priest called the changes ridiculous.
He also declares himself to be a communist and proud of it. when the parishoner said he was going to the bishop, the priest said: go right ahead, the bishop knows me and what i stand for.

here this priest, thanks Mluther for having freed us from the course of the Monarchaic Church, impious, cruel, murderous, lying, powerfull CC. then he says to the parishoner: dont send me this trash anymore.
he calls luthero, saint luther.

Wisdomseeker: Once again, thank you for sharing this video. Can you please tell me what they are singing?

One cannot make these things up. It is diabolical beyond our imagination. I am sending this directly to the Pope (benedettoxvi@vatican.va). I urge everyone who sees this video to do the same. It is not only to directly inform the Pope and those closest to him about this abuse, but also to put them on alert that other people throughout the world know it as well. Hopefully, they will perceive the pressure to act.

I cannot imagine how these scandals are allowed to persist. I weep for Brazil. Glad you pointed out that the priests are young. I hadn’t noticed that. One wonders if they were validly ordained in the first place. I actually hope not, so that we can get rid of them faster.

Another note, church buildings do not belong to individual priests. How dare they desecrate them or even occupy them.

Melchior: You obviously come to this discussion with a different point of view. That’s fine. But to dare to insult **wisdomseeker **and put him in the category of heretic is a low blow. You owe him an apology.

Wisdomseeker is a fine and faithful Catholic, as evidenced by all his posts. Have some respect. Furthermore, you are like St. Paul - you are about to be knocked off your horse and see the light. You are at a very important crossroads. You obviously like being an active Catholic and having an influence in your parish. If you have been lured into drumming at Mass and LifeTeen Masses, you may be well-intentioned, but nevertheless, just plain wrong. Now is your chance to see the Truth, seek the Truth, and to use your leadership abilities to help people understand the One True Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. I say this for your benefit, not to put you down.

the situation of the Church in Brasil is really painfull. this is just one of many abuses.
the Catholic TV station belongs to a charismatic priest who is destroying the Catholic Faith. he sells cds of music just like protestant music. people are saying that his cds have picture of him laying on the beach in sexy manner. he is always asking for money from the people. i think the pope knows the situation. they dont like BXVI, they like JPII.

Truism, I owe no one an apology at this point. Someone who denies the validity of the Ordinary Form (and by proxy the Extraordinary Form at the same time) or saying “we have been cursed for changing the Liturgy” (forgetting of course that the Liturgy has been changed several times before the Mass of Paul VI) borders on heresy, as it means the Gates of Hell has prevailed.

Wisdomseeker, I’m not yet a member of the Franciscan Order, as I have some unfinished business to attend to first. I do, however, still ascribe and live by the Franciscan Spirituality, which is no different than traditionalists who identify themselves with the FSSP or the SSPX. The Franciscans in your area may have fallen, that is not indicative of the rest of the Order. It’s one of the largest Orders in the world after all, there’s going to be some bad apples. We have some solid Franciscans on this very board who are tireless in their efforts. And in fact, apparently a certain Saint that a few people admire on these boards was a member of the Franciscans; Saint Pope Pius X. You may have heard of him and his followers. If you want to judge me based on Franciscans, then feel free to do so. I know the truth about the Order, and the holy men and women who were a part of it and continue to be a part of it.

“Guitar Masses” are in of and of themselves not a bad thing. If they were they would be banned by this point, but they are not. The current head of the CWDWS has stated recently he’s not going to ban guitars, the current head of the CDF is on the board of directors with the OCP publishing house. It appears both Cardinals understand that they have preferences, but not everyone shares those preferences. It’s a shame that the ones you have seen have had some outrageous abuses at them, which probably is what helped form your opinion about them. The same thing can happen to someone who runs into some schismatics like the Society of St. Pius V, who if that’s your first experience with “traditionalists” it’ll probably leave a sour taste in your mouth.

It’s also obvious the Charismatic movement in Brazil has been heavily influenced by Liberation Theology, and that you’re not a fan of the movement as you’ve specifically have mentioned two troublesome people and labeled them as Charismatic. That’s a true tragedy, as the Charismatic movement is fully endorsed by Rome. I’m certain if you ran into some schismatic traditionalists who claim the Chair of Peter is empty you wouldn’t assume all traditionalists were like that…right?

Schismatics are schismatics, regardless of their beliefs. But they need to be judged on an individual basis and not in broad strokes, otherwise it would be very easy to throw the SSPV and the SSPX together. Go a step further and you can, if you fly off the deep end, say that the FSSP is in that group even, as they share a traditionalist mindset in some cases. It’s a dangerous game, generalizing. And really, lets be honest; Liberation Theology is that pervasive that regardless of any movements that happen in Latin America, Liberation Theology would still find its way in.

*“If you have been lured into drumming at Mass and LifeTeen Masses, you may be well-intentioned, but nevertheless, just plain wrong”. *

I was never lured into anything. I willingly chose to join the Parish, and I freely chose to begin playing drums there. And although you may see it as “just plain wrong”, several other people do not, including people within Rome. It is your opinion that they are wrong, just as it is my opinion that Mozart’s music shouldn’t be used at Mass due to his Masonic ties.

Now is your chance to see the Truth, seek the Truth, and to use your leadership abilities to help people understand the One True Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.

I already see the Truth. I see Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition, and I teach them to several people on a weekly basis. What some do is confuse tradition with Tradition, and when people disagree on traditions those who mix the two up immediately get up’n’arms about things. There are several things that some “traditionalists” see as terrible, but the reality is as lowercase traditions they do not have the same weight as that of uppercase Traditions. Things like the Immaculate Conception and women not being able to become Priests are from uppercase Tradition, and as such cannot be changed (and people should stop trying to change them. When the Venerable JP2 says women cannot be ordained because it’s simply not possible, people need to drop the issue). Disciplines and customs on the other hand, are not nearly as severe nor dogmatic as other items, despite the extreme (and in some cases excessive) importance some place on them.

I have a leadership role, and it’s one I take seriously. For seven years at that parish I have had a role in their Faith formation and I act as a paternal figure towards them (a “team dad”, as it were). Now I find that the kids I’ve ministered to when they were in high school are now becoming leaders themselves. And really; they’re all my kids. All of them.

The fact I play drums at Mass does not take away from my orthodoxy, regardless of your opinions on drums. I understand certain things have a stigma but if you and others like wisdomseeker can’t separate people from your preconceived notions, you’ll have a difficult time of things. You list off issues of orthodoxy as it pertains to dogma, Sacred Scripture, and Sacred Tradition and I will bet five metaphorical dollars we are in agreement.

(continued…)

Am I at a crossroads? Yes, but not in the way you may think. My wife and I are expecting our first child in January, yet I’ve been unemployed for five months. That, my friend, is a crossroads of sorts. So at this point I don’t need self-styled “traditionalists” telling me I’m “well-intentioned” (I already know I’m well-intentioned). The Paul comparison is apt though, although I’ve already had the falling off the horse moment 13 or so years ago. Now I’m running the race, keeping my eyes on what is needed. You know something I need? I just found out I didn’t get a job I was hoping for so I’m still unemployed. So what I need, what I really need, is “traditionalists” praying for all my kids and for my family rather than casting judgments on the Ordinary Form.

Think y’all can do that?

Wait, drums are okay but Mozart is not?
