The golden rule was given by God to a world without rules.
Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. This is the law and the prophets. (Matthew 7:12)
Jesus clearly says that this is the teaching of “the law and the prophets”. This is from the Old Testament when people sacrificed their children to false gods, engaged in incest and had boy prostitutes in the pagan temples.
The bar is much higher for Christians under the New Covenant.
***But I say to you that hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. To him who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from him who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. *(Luke 6:27-29)
