Where Should I Move? St. Paul or Hartford?

It sure is Minesotta NICE! 🙂

And…it looks more and more certain that I’ll be moving to St. Paul!
 
I have heard that we have the most perpetual adoration chapels in all of the united states. that is an awesome reason to move here!!!
 
My husband, children, and l have lived in both Connecticut (Shelton) and suburban St. Paul/Minneapolis. The personalities of the areas are very different. Minnesota is more reserved than Connecticut. I didn’t find Minnesotans to be very outgoing.The cost of living is more affordable in Minnesota. There is a great deal to do in both areas. When I moved from Connecticut to Minnesota, we experienced culture shock. In both areas we were blessed by finding a wonderful parish. Our first parish in Minnesota was into liberation theology, so I made it my mission to find a parish that our family could call home. I found it at the Church of the Ephiphany in Coon Rapids. My faith was rekindled and I fell deeper in love with the beauty and solace of our Faith… I would choose St. Paul.

Oh my goodness! I go to Epiphany, and I call it home!

Two very dear friends came to Mass with me today, and I showed them around Epiphany with the same pride I would feel at my own house!

God has blessed this parish…it’s a vey special place, and it’s where God brought me, too.

And in spite of the current problems, our Archdiocese is a great one. Maybe we’re undergoing a trial by fire, but I would recommend St. Paul.

I’m guessing La Chiara has already chosen a home, though? Where is it? (geographically, not specifically).

Just out of curiosity…what is the cost of living in Conneticut? How does it compare to, say, the real estate value? It’s ridiculous here, and I would think it would be more so on the East coast. No?
 
I have been to St Paul and Hartford on business a couple of times. Personally I love CT and if I chose to move somewhere it would be there. Hartford has many of the problems that mid-size cities have however I still love it. (non-Catholic reasons follow)- the restaraunts, the shopping, the people—I loved not seeing beat up cars and trash all over in CT (however I know there are some less savory areas of Hartford)–the driving was easy.
Every time I have been to the Minneapolis area I have been accosted by bums all over the place–on the bus, outside of Marshal Fields–everywhere (which is rather suprising for how cold it gets)…I feel it is a rather dirty city…
Anyways that’s just my 2 cents…
 
I live in the Hartford Archdiocese, and our Archbishop is very dynamic. I don’t know anything about his orthodoxy, but things seem to be improving a bit in the Archdiocese. Connecticut seems to suffer from the “hurry disease”, which can sometimes be a problem and getting people to practice their faith. The cost of living can be high though, depending upon where you live.
 
Having lived in both places, I’d have to go with St. Paul. Not to copy other people’s ideas, but:
  1. Much cheaper
  2. More “conservative” churches in the area
  3. Less snow
  4. People are generally nicer
  5. Tons of perpetual adoration chapels!
  6. Many newly ordained priests - that’s got to tell you something.
If you’re looking for a really conservative, orthodox church, St. Paul has one of the best ever in St. Agnes. Beautiful church, awesome priests who are very devout and tell it like it is - no PC junk! My church in St. Louis Park (Holy Family - about 15 minutes away) is not quite as conservative as St. Agnes, but is still very loyal to the Pope and we don’t fall for the PC stuff. Plus Father Dufner at my church is probably THE single best-speaking priest I’ve ever known in my life.

I just e-mailed you! If you are looking at the Religious life, it doesn’t matter where you go - just go where you are needed! Perhaps the support of your family should override the “lures” of our beautiful Minnesota.

Your first post here spoke volumes about your family. I moved a ton when I was little and never got to know my extended family. I would be hard pressed to move from them now!

Ultimatley - it’s not the parish or the diocese or the state that matters - it’s your faith which is a gift from God. He will help you through even “liberal” parishes! And He may be calling you to be an example to others!

Lots to think and pray about! I’d love to know what you decide.

May our Lord be with you - may your Guardian Angel guide you to hear His call for you!
