Where should I take my son for his 13th birthday?

You beat me to it . I was also going to add that there is skiing in NM! The mountains north of Santa Fe have skiing and if there is enough snow the eastern slope of the Sandia’s in Albuquerque have skiing (not something I do so I can’t tell you which ski areas are open or how much snow is in each one).

Hey, there’s skiing in the southern part, too… Ruidoso, which is where I work and 25 miles from where I live! (And closer to Carlsbad than Santa Fe and Taos.)

I love Santa Fe… my SIL is an extern at the Carmelite Monastery there! We’ve been to Chama (the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Narrow Gauge Railroad) and want to take the kids camping up there sometime. My brother lives in Albuquerque. I have uncles in Roswell, cousins in Hobbs. And we live down the road from White Sands National Monument. Lots of cool places to visit in New Mexico.

And NO, I do NOT work for the tourism board!

The ATV’s is a great idea. We did that this summer at Pismo Beach. They even let my son who was 4 at the time and his cousin who was also 4 ride. They just had to watch a safety video, which they really took in and followes all of the rules. It might be worth looking into if there are any good ATV sites in your region. All of my kids completely loved it.

Is there somethng out of wack here, maybe the wrong message to a young person? There are half a dozen states listed as possible places for finding something to do for a birthday party and there is nothing wonderful spectacular stupendous enough. Good grief! Take him for a pizza. Just let him know you are grateful to God for his life. Making such a big deal and creating so much agony over a birthday is the wrong message folks. Donate a couple hundred dollars in his name to the Missionaries of Charity who serve the poor and make him a cake and sing happy bithday. What will you do for his sixeenth, buy him a BMW?

Hey, I forgot about Ruidoso but you are right! There is a cool Horse museum there too. As a last trip for my Girl Scout troop, three of them, one of their moms and I went there for several days. We had a blast!

You don’t have to be on the Tourism Board to talk about what is wonderful about this State! Have you been to Bandalier? You know I have lived her for 27 years and have never actually been to the “Four Corners” yet I have been to Mesa Verde several times!

We used to camp up in the Jemez frequently. There is this really nice little chapel/church in Jemez Springs where we would go to Mass on Sundays.

Any way, Rob’sWife, we don’t just have shopping and gambling in this State although we do have plenty of Casinos.

BTW, I think your idea of having a special trip with your son for one of his “big” Birthdays is cool!

**well I’m sure we’d share some laughs if nothing else. We are both rather odd in these things. I can’t roller skate to save my life and neither can he, but we both like ice skating. maybe since we can barely stand still on a skateboard, we’d do better on a snowboard? **

Alrighty. We aren’t fond of camping in January. Anywhere. But that does sound mighty fine for warmer weather. Same as Colorado. Maybe the family can go later in the year to one of those… ever hopeful.

If he likes the Old West, there’s Lincoln which is a town that’s basically a museum to Billy the Kid. Our kids love going there at least once every summer. You can even ride an original Wells Fargo stage coach (reservations are required!)

Lots of horseback riding stables around, too. The Museum of the American West also has an awesome sculpture right along Highway 70… “Free Spirits at Noisy Water” which consists of 2 1/2 times life-size sculptures of seven horses (all different breeds.) Lots of people driving by tend to do so with their mouths hanging open… they’re beautiful and worth a closer look!

Then there’s the Gila Wilderness in the south western part of the state (near Silver City). That’s our next camping destination!

Most of the campgrounds in the Jemez are closed for the winter .

Lincoln is a fun little city to visit. There is supposed to be a museum to Smokey the Bear in Capitan which is close to Lincoln but we always seem to get there when it is closed.

If you have anyone who is interested in WW2, there is Los Alamos, a city that was created up in the Jemez (could be the Sangre de Cristos, I never know where one ends and the other begins) just for the scientists who developed the Atomic Bomb. Go there and then to the Atomic Museum in Albuquerque. Very interesting.

From what I’ve read of your posts your DH is a very hard worker and it would be nice for him to get some alone time with his kids too. After all, you *did *birth the children, and it might be time for DH to get to do some of the really special things with them. No offense intended, and I’m sure you’ll both have a ball wherever you go!

Yes, indeed he does work hard, but he doesn’t miss special things - those are the reasons he works hard. This trip would be a first for me. He took the older two on a weekend trip to houston earlier this year.
