Hi, I am a Southern Baptist…looking forward to convert 😃 I have had different answers about it and I want them settled today. As a Baptist, I hard heard these: 1.) It came from Heaven 2.) The Disciples guided by God wrote it. Now, as an exploring Baptist I have heard these remarks from the Catholic Church: 1.) The Catholic Church wrote it. 2.) The Disciples guided by God wrote it. 3.) The Disciples guided by God wrote it and the Catholic Church publicized and put it together. 4.) It came from Heaven. …These are all fascinating beliefs on which the Bible was made… If I had to choose…I would think Catholic #3…It just seems like it would make more sense. But I want your opinion please…Thanks

Every one of the alternatives you list is deficient in one way or another.

Catholic high school students spend an entire year of Religion class on the history of the Bible (at least they did when I was in high school).

The best way to learn a lot about the Bible in a short time, from a non-sectarian source, is to go to your local library and consult the Encyclopeadia Britannica, ā€œMacropediaā€ section, under "Biblical Literature’. Ask if they have a circulating copy. It’s nearly 100 pages in small type, but it will tell you everything that you need to know, and you will find both Catholics and Baptists among the contributors.

Number 3 is correct. After the first three hundred years, there were many documents circulating around claiming to be inspired scripture, some were, some were not. The Catholic Church finally decided to organize the most important in one volume and declared the rest to be not worthy of our attention. ā€œWhere We Got The Bibleā€ by The Right Rev. Henry G. Graham gives a pretty good explanation of how we have the bible we have today.

Actually none of those choices are correct on that poll.

The Bible was inspired by the Holy Spirit, written by the writers of the books of the Bible, and then put together by the Roman Catholic Church.

God bless.

The bible came from the inspired word of God written down by various often unknown authors. The Jews kept these writings on scrolls.the NT was written by just a few authors who we believed we have identified. They is still some questions regarding the actual authors though.Nevertheless they were inspired writings taken from Christ’s life. They were kept by various individuals who were loyal to the inspired authors. And they guarded them dilligently.Later they were combined to form the complete bible. These were always protected from additions or subtractions by clergymen who belonged to newly formed Church.

Actually I thought the Holy Spirit ultimatley keeps additions or subtractions from occuring.

God bless.

I voted for the third option, but I felt I had to explain deeper what I believe:

The disciples wrote it under the inspiration and guidance of the Holy Spirit. The Roman Catholic Church then collected the inspired writings and collected them together into one bound ā€œbook.ā€

It is my understanding that the OT was from our Jewish heritage. The development of the KJV OT is an interesting read. The NT was written, or in some cases, possibly narrated, by the disciples. Over the course of time, other works were introduced as having apostolic authority. About 400 AD, with over 250 works claiming that authority, the Church got together and compiled the current Bible. They were guided by the Holy Spirit and Tradition. The interesting thing about those that claim sola scriptura is that sola scriptura wasn’t part of compiling the Bible.

The Bible was inspired by the Holy Spirit and written down by many unknown authors, and edited and redacted by Jewish editors. The NT portions were written by various followers of Christ protected by the HS. Over the generations it has been protected from important errors of changes by the HS, and in the early centuries of the Christian era there were a variety of decisions made about what texts were divinely inspired.

These decisions were made by various councils but were not exactly the same everywhere - different parts of the Church have always used slightly different texts. Nonetheless, this variation was accepted by the Church Universal, which is the important point.

To say that the Roman Catholic Church compiled it is weird, since that is only one part of the Church and other parts have different canons.

As a former SB, I find it interesting that you have the ability, and I’m thankful for that, to post of this ā€œCatholicā€ website, but when I tried to join the Baptistboard.com, they would not let me! I thought it would be interesting to possibly engage BB.com in some discussions.

I agree. šŸ™‚

Good points Bluegoat. The Biblical Canon is not identical throughout all of Christendom.

Who exactly decided what was deemed worthy and what wasn’t?
Catholic bishops determined the canon of Sacred Scripture through a series of councils (Hippo, Rome, Carthage and Trent). It wasn’t determined based upon what was worthy, but rather what was inspired by the Holy Spirit. As has already been stated, there were many writings circulating at the time, some heretical, but many just as beautiful and meaningful as the books included in the canon. Google Clement’s letter to the Corinthians and then decide why this should not have been included. I can’t, but the bishops, guided by the Holy Spirit did. The New Testament was written by Catholics and therefore is truly a Catholic document. The bottom line is this: All who believe the Bible to be the inspired word of God had better hope that the Catholic Church was guided by the Holy Spirit in determining its canon because there was no other authority that made that determination. If you cannot rely on the authority of the Catholic Church then you can not rely on the inspiration of the Bible. One thing is for certain. It didn’t fall out of heaven.
