When you are dialoguing with a non-Catholic Christian and you want to argue for the truth of Catholicism (as opposed to Mere Christianity), what verse(s) do you like to begin with, and how do you build your argument?
I’ve read several conversions of protestants and they all seem to agree that the most difficult issue for them was accepting the Catholic teachings on the Virgin Mary. That was their last obstacle. The issue of the “brothers and sisters of Jesus” is deep rooted in them.
I would start my argument by proving that James, the “brother of the Lord”, is not Mary’s son. To do that I would go first to Galatians 1:18-19:
“Later, after three years, I went up to Jerusalem to meet Cephas [Peter], and I stayed with him for fifteen days. BUT I DID NOT SEE ANY OTHER APOSTLE EXCEPT JAMES, THE LORD’S BROTHER.”
In other words what Paul is saying is: “When I went to Jerusalem I saw only two Apostles, one was Peter and the other was James, the brother of the Lord.”
We know there are two Apostles named James: 1) James “the Greater”, brother of John the Apostle and both sons of Zebedee and Salome, and 2) James “the Lesser” or “younger”, the one mentioned by Paul above, but he was not the son of St. Joseph and the Virgin Mary as we will see in these passages from the NT:
Mt 10:3, “James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew, the tax collector; JAMES, THE SON OF ALPHAEUS, and Thaddaeus;”
Mt 13:55 "Isn’t he the carpenter’s son? Isn’t Mary his mother AND AREN’T JAMES, JOSEPH, SIMON AND JUDAS HIS BROTHERS?
Mt 27:56, “Among them were Mary Magdalene, MARY “the other” Mary] THE MOTHER OF JAMES AND JOSEPH, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.”
Mk 3:18, “Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, JAMES SON OF ALPHEUS, Thaddeus, Simon the Cananean”
Mk 6:3, “Who is he but the carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of JAMES AND JOSET AND JUDAS AND SIMON? His sisters, too, are they not here among us?” So they took offense at him."
Mk 15:40, “There were also some women watching from a distance; among them were Mary Magdalene, MARY THE MOTHER OF JAMES THE YOUNGER AND JOSET, AND SALOME,”
Lk 6:15-16, “Matthew and Thomas; JAMES SON OF ALPHEUS and Simon called the Zealot; AND JUDAS THE BROTHER OF JAMES, and Judas Iscariot, which also was the traitor.”
Lk 24:10, “Among the women who brought the news were Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and MARY THE MOTHER OF JAMES.”
Jn 19:25, “Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister MARY, WHO WAS THE WIFE OF CLEOPHAS, and Mary of Magdala.”
Acts 1:13, “On entering the city they went to the room upstairs where they were staying. Present there were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, JAMES, SON OF ALPHEUS; Simon the Zealot and Judas son of James.”
Jude 1:1, “Jude, servant of Jesus Christ AND BROTHER OF JAMES, to those called to the faith, beloved by God the Father and kept in Christ Jesus.”
Summarizing, James “the Lord’s brother”…
- is an Apostle. (Galatians 1:18-19)
- his real father and mother are Alpheus/Clopas and Mary (“the other” Mary). (Matthew 10:3, Matthew 27:56, Mark 15:40, Luke 24:10, John 19:25)
- he has three brothers: Joseph (Joset), Judas (Jude) and Simon. (Matthew 13:55, Mark 6:3, Luke 6:16)
This proves that James “the Lesser”, Joseph, Judas and Simon are not children of the Virgin Mary
I would add that none of the “brothers and sisters” of Jesus are EVER referred to as the “sons and daughters of Mary” in the Bible. They are always referred to in relation to Jesus, not Mary. They are Jesus relatives or “cousins”, a word that the Aramaic and Hebrew languages lack.
Finally I would refer to Jesus at 12 years old, lost in the Temple when His parents “looked for him among their RELATIVES and friends” (Luke 2:44). Why didn’t they ask their other children if they knew where their brother was? Now I’ll move about 15 years later, when “there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus was also invited to the wedding with his disciples” (John 2:1-2). When you’re invited to a wedding it means that it’s a family event, more so in those days and that land. Why aren’t His “brothers and sisters” in this event either? Mary is there, so is Jesus, even His disciples are mentioned, but no mention of the “brothers and sisters” of Jesus. Why? Because there were none.
