So DH got some inheritance money and we would like to donate a portion to charity. I was wondering if anyone has suggestions for some good Catholic charities we could give some of the money to?

We also plan on buying a bunch of $5 gift certificates to fast food places to give to homeless people, as we don’t feel comfortable just giving them cash.

Any ideas?

I like to give to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. 👍 It’s not exactly a Catholic charity, but it does a lot of good. 👍

Why not start with your local parish? They likely have many worthy causes they are supporting in their various ministries. Perhaps there are some DVDs that the CCD program might really want but can’t afford. Maybe the food pantry could use extra money right now. Maybe the pro-life group could benefit from a donation to support their Gabriel Project work. Maybe the parish could use some liturgical supplies-- like I know our parish needs some altar server robes in a bad way… some of our boys are getting very tall and their server robes look like bermuda shorts!

You don’t have to look far to find worthy causes.

I don’t know a parish anywhere that has *too much *money!

What about your Church? St. Jude’s is a good one! There are a lot of pro-life charities too. Does your Church have a sister parish? We have one in Mexico that we help. You could “adopt” a child from another country. There’s also local food pantries and clothes closets, that although they might not be Catholic, could really use the help. Pray about it and see where God leads you! It’s wonderful that you want to share your blessings with others!

That is so nice. I would get McDonald’s gift cards since they serve breakfast as well as lunch, dinner etc.

Depends if you prefer to donate locally or internationally. For local I donate to Catholic Charities. For international there’s Food for the Poor , or if this interests you (not Catholic though) there is Kiva , which is loans to individuals/small businesses to help them get off the ground. The beauty of that in my mind is that when the loan is repaid you can donate again. I haven’t actually done it myself though.

You can also go to your parish and ask if they have a St.Vincent dePaul Society that serves the local poor and needy, as well as those who come to the parish door looking for assistance. Or you can check with the diocese for a PADS shelter…a homeless shelter in your community.

I would donate half of the designated amount to a charity that serves the poor (like the ones previously posted) and the other half to a Catholic media organization that serves us poorly educated Catholics…like Catholic Answers!

I second the SVDP society. Parish conferences of SVDP rely almost entirely on parishoner donations to fund their work with the poor.

How about a small portion to your local Catholic School? You could help a needy family with tuition and/or registration fees! 👍

While not a Catholic charity, I think modestneeds.org allows me to feed the poor, house the homeless, etc unlike any other charity.

The way it is structured, it’s almost fun! Plus, I track the progress “my families” are making and I can then pray for them too!

And St. Vincent de Paul Society!!! And the technology department, esp. if there is a good Catholic school in the parish!!!

And I like this charity I discovered on Dave Ramsey. It’s not Catholic, but it does a lot of good. I’m trying to find the name. They give to people who only need a grant to get to work, or to get the utilities turned on.

I really like the McDonald’s gift certs idea.

CRS or Catholic Relief Services help people around the world as need arises. I started donating to them before I came back to the church & had to reduce donations to them to contribute to the parish. They have an excellent record of dollar percentage getting to actual aid in the 95% range.

I also contribute to St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Danny Thomas founded it & his mission is upheld by their record.

I think this a great idea, with the exception of the McDonalds cards…

I would suggest perhaps Subway? Might be healthier for them…and those $5 footlongs come in a variety of choices and they are filling…just a thought.🙂

How about sponsoring a child or children through Christian Children’s Fund? Or supporting the local food shelf?
