Where to live Northern California?

My husband is from California but we have never lived there, we are currently living outside the US. We could move back to California but don’t know where, except not Sacramento. Is there a community you would recommend with vibrant parishes, Catholic schools and walkable? Does that exist in Northern California ? Ideally we could walk to school, parish and shops but I’m sure that’s unusual. Recommendations please!

Thanks so much both of you! My DH now says Northern or Central CA, if anyone else would like to share their opinion I would love to hear it. 🙂
 
Have you looked into the political and fiscal situation in California? I grew up there but can’t in good conscience recommend anyone move there now.
 
I live in southern Cali - but ive only visiting San Fran, and I enjoyed it although I am not away of the Catholic schools and other things
