Dear Kendy,
Thank you for opening up and sharing your experiences in this thread. I am really really really touched, not just by your courage and your success (yes, success, for you are, after all, back on track and a friend of Almighty God’s again) but also by the many inspiring words from everybody who posted in this thread from all around the world. PRAISE THE LORD ! Blessed be God in His angels and in HIS SAINTS!
The things that came to my mind that might possibly shed new light for you are: (1) Job, and (2) the pagan woman who begged Jesus for a cure for her daughter in Mark 7 and Matthew 15.
Job, as we know, was sorely tested by God for quite a while. It’s true the Syrophoenician woman (aka the Canaanite woman) has her request answered by Jesus, but not before some pretty sharp rebukes and testing - it is her remarkable humility in admitting that she is indeed a dog seeking scraps from the table which moves Jesus to grant her request.

It’s hard to second-guess God or know what He has in mind when things go wrong. Others have said that He may have been speaking to you way back when in some way and you didn’t listen. But let’s assume that He did not in fact give you the sign, the direction you prayed for before you left the Church. I am thinking He must have had some reason not to answer your prayer at that time - i.e., to draw some good, some virtue, or some spiritual accomplishment forth from your soul which would not have otherwise come to light.
Another thing to think about, which might bring you some comfort and help you direct your thoughts away from regret, is that “things can always be worse.” That may not be much comfort when you are suffering right now, but I’m just suggesting maybe if you try to imagine having become a person who actually finds what they think is happiness in a sinful life, and completely obliterating one’s conscience … now, that could be a real and eternal disaster, right?
God bless you, sister - you have my prayers.
