Before Jesus was born of the virgin Mary was he in existence? Was he in heaven waiting for how time on earth or was he yet to be created by God? I know they are the same person and its a mystery but is there any kind of explanation? I suppose it isn’t very important to my faith that I know the nitty gritty… its just interesting to me 🙂

The name “Jesus” is commonly used to apply to Jesus who walked the earth and taught in synagogues. As such he is one and the same Person as the 2nd Person of the Trinity, who exists from all eternity.

The Second Person of the Trinity possesses the one divine nature. He is God. At one point in historical time, he took on a human nature as well (but not a human person–he remains one divine person), and became man.

But one shouldn’t think of Jesus the Word as somehow “waiting” for the right moment to be inserted into history. God does not occupy space or time, and Jesus is God. To God, all times are just “now,” whether 6 BC or 2012 AD. It’s not a temporal continuum to God.

So to be more specific: Jesus as God exists and existed for all eternity (which does not mean a stretch of unending time).

Jesus as man, had a beginning in time, conceived in the womb of the virgin Mary, lived in Nazareth, died on the cross, was resurrected and remains in heaven. As man, Jesus had a temporal beginning. As God, he does not. He is both God and man. Two natures, but one person.

In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God…

Paternity; spiration; filiation and procession.

Hi arose57,

Jesus as we know is the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity–the Son. Therefore he was With the Father and the Holy Spirit in Heaven before He went down to the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Therefore He was already in existence.

There is one little problem with what you said here:

I know they are the same person
There is One God but He is not of the same Person. There are three Persons in God. The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Thus composing the Blessed Trinity(Three- in-One).

God Bless.

Part of what you are asking can be answered from this:

Jesus, the Son of God, was true man and true God in existence since the beginning.

Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” (Genesis 1:26)

The Old Testament written in Hebrew, in which this verse contained the word “Aloheem” instead of the word “Eal”. Aloheem means Gods, plural, while Eal means God singular. This is the first revelation of consisting of more than one divine person; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

The Nicene Creed states:

…And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, and born of the Father before all ages. (God of God) light of light, true God of true God. Begotten not made, consubstantial to the Father, by whom all things were made…

Exactly what I was thinking. Read the beginning of the Gospel of John 🙂

“In the beginning was the Word (Jesus), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” - John 1:1

Jesus, the Son of God, was true man and true God in existence since the beginning.
Be careful there. The human (person) who was born of Mary didn’t exist in the beginning; he was incarnated at a certain point in time. However, the Logos – the second person of the Trinity – is eternal, and has existed always with God the Father.

So, if the question is “where was the human person who walked on the earth?”, then the answer is “not yet born”. If the question has to do with whether Jesus (the ‘true God’ part of “true God and true man”) existed, then the answer is ‘yes’, and since he was without a body, then the “where?” question doesn’t have an answer (after all, ‘where’ was God the Father before creation?).
