more need to vent than need an answer. They won’t expect my husband or I to work, as we currently work EVERY OTHER DAY besides Sunday, but WHY do people need to maximize profits so much? There is NO bodily reward… just a mind one! Of course the manager is not going to be working Sunday, watch…
It makes me want to leave my job of 7 years, but there just isn’t another job that will pay right away or give the hours.
Years ago, I hear, all stores closed on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday!!! What person DOES NOT WANT THIS? There is PLENTY of house work to do on the other two days, whether one takes Saturday or Sunday for rest.
How I wish life was still simple farming, small town, horse transportation.

Where I work, Sunday has always been a work day.

I work in a hospital. People get sick on Sundays, too, and need care.

What kind of company do you work for?

I understand. Obviously you are not calling for hospitals to close lol. Where I live a couple of business are closed on Sunday… Hobby Lobby, Chick file a and local businesses. It would be nice if there were more.

Strangely enough, in Italy I find that the big stores have long opening hours on a Sunday, and that’s in a Catholic country. In the UK, there are still trading restrictions which mean that most shops which open have to limit their hours!

I don’t remember most stores ever being closed on Saturdays, much less Fridays. Saturday was the big shopping day for people who worked M-F, because most stores weren’t open late on weekdays. When I was a kid, there was one department store that stayed open until 9 p.m. one night a week, that was it.

What does it matter to you if, as you say, you won’t be expected to work Sundays anyway?

Well, I don’t remember any stores being closed on Friday or Saturday - only Sunday.
I wouldn’t say farm life was simple, either - lot of hard work and never knowing if the crops will be good that year. Small town life is not necessarily simple - got a medical problem? Good luck finding a hospital nearby or even a doctor. Horse and buggy? Fine if you don’t have to commute 20 miles to work in the city and horses have to be taken care of and fed.

Many a farmer has worked on a Sunday, impossible not to.

The reason many businesses do it is the psychology that is customers shop on Sundays, and drop by their store and find them closed, they go to a competitor and then form a “relationship” with the competitor, and next time they shop, no matter the day of the week, they will go to the competitor, rather than repeat the experience of showing up to find the shop closed.

So yes, profit is behind it, but not just the profits they would lose on Sunday, but ultimately the profits that they would lose overall because people will choose a shop that is open any time they get the whim to go there.

The spiritual/moral implications are real, but can be complicated. If being open on Sunday protects the profits and jobs of the employees, as it might especially for a small business, does that offset the issue of working on a Sunday?

A farmer might work on Sunday to feed the stock, or bring in the grain or hay before the storm comes…to protect that which feeds his family and ultimately the outlying community. For some businesses they might feel that the loss of sales might negatively affect not only excess profit, but the viability of the business altogether.

You beat me to it.

I was going to say that it might maximize profit; then, again, it might mean that the store actually makes a profit; and it might mean, at least in some circumstances, that the store can actually pay the employees more. Everyone would like a raise, but that has to come from somewhere.

If you were farming you’d be working every day.

Well, if you and your husband won’t be expected to work on Sunday, that’s a really good thing. I work in retail and can remember how in the '70’s, the store where I worked was open on only part of the day on Sunday, from noon to 5:00pm (JC Penney). Now where I work, the store is open from 7:00am - 11:00pm. My mom can remember when no stores were open on Sunday, and people just did their shopping earlier in the week, or on Saturday, and it wasn’t a big deal. But you’re right - the businesses want to maximize profits. We Catholics should try to have Sunday off, but that’s not always possible. American shoppers are used to having stores open now on Sunday, and wouldn’t want to be inconvenienced by having stores closed. Being comfortable is our first priority, it would seem, here in the U.S.

When I converted, the priest (SSPX) told me to tell my boss that I can’t work on Sunday anymore. I was hesitant, but I told my boss this, and she agreed to give me Sundays off, though she wasn’t happy about it.

I think that it was better when we were a more agrarian culture. Only the work that needed to be done on Sunday (care of animals, etc.) was done (at least for Catholics, I think. :)).

Only? Have you ever cared for livestock? anywhoo…

World was different 50 years ago. Most families were one income and it was easier to get the shopping done mid week. I miss that too. Wish Sunday most businesses were closed because it forced ME to have a “day off” because running errands wasn’t a possibility.

I liked when Sat was chore day (for the kids, every day was chore day for mom) and on Sun we had dinner with my grandparents. I really do miss that.

Have I ever cared for livestock? Only in my dreams (I’m a wanna-be farmer, currently living in the middle of a huge city). Ha! 😃

I can imagine that caring for livestock is more difficult than I have imagined. I helped my grandmother to write her memoirs, and much of it was what she remembered of farm life. That’s the extent of my knowledge, which isn’t much.

I do chores on Sunday, but only what is really needed. Obviously the dishes and cooking needs to be done, and maybe laundry, and making beds and picking up clothes. I asked a priest about it once, and he said that if it really needs to be done, then do it. But really, things like mopping the kitchen floor can wait until a weekday, right? It wouldn’t be good to obsess on it, though. It’s just common sense.

We should try, of course, to keep the Sabbath day holy, as we are instructed to do. We can still think about God while doing the dishes, though! 🙂

If you feel that strongly you are welcome to quit your job. There are millions of americans looking for work and would love the opportunity to take your place.

I can tell you, with a few exception of a weekend once or twice a year, there has never been a time in the USA that all stores closed every fri, sat, and sun. I grew up in a small town as did my wife and the only day most stores were closed was on Sun. But even then there were store open and people worked on Sun.

During the summers i lived on my grandparents farm, it wasnt fun or nice. It was very very very very very very very hard work. My grandparents that both died in their 60’s look as if they were in their 90’s. I can remember men that were only 45 to 55 and look really old and they died young. That is why the age of 60 was “old age” and today 60 is towards the end of “middle age”. I wouldnt go back to that life style unless forced to go back to it.
