I am researching the life of Bishop Nicholas Bubwith, 1355-142, who was successively, Bishop of London, Salisbury, and Bath and Wells, and I am having difficulty locating any of his ordinations.
So, a basic question, if I may:
When an undergraduate entered Oxford or Cambridge in the 14th century it was usually followed by a career in the church, or in the clerical service of the King. In the case of Nicholas Bubwith he had career in the service of the King, rising to Master of the Rolls, Keeper of the Privy Seal, and Lord High Treasurer of England, and all his clerical preferments were simply part of his emoluments, and he only became an active cleric in later life when Bishop of Bath and Wells. So my question concerns where graduates of Oxford or Cambridge were normally ordained, if on leaving University they immediately headed to London to take up a career in the King’s service:

- Could they apply for Letters Dimissory in advance to get ordained following graduation without the need to return to their home diocese?
- Or could they only apply for Letters Dimissory after graduation?
- If they obtained Letters Dimissory did they usually get ordained by the Bishop of Lincoln (covers archdeaconry of Oxford) or the Bishop of Ely (covers Cambridge), or by the Bishop of London, if they were heading for London to take up employment as a Kings Clerk (in Chancery, Exchequer, or the two Benches) ?
- Or did they always have to return to their home diocese for ordination?
