Where'd the Creed Go?

Yesterday at Sunday Mass we didn’t recite the Nicene Creed. Why? Forgetful priest or forgetful candidate?🙂

The creed was recited as usual at the Mass I attended yesterday.

It was probably an oversite on part of your priest not to recite the Creed.

You may want to kindly ask your priest about the leaving it out.

Trick

It is possible your priest forgot. It is also possible it was left out for a real reason. There are a few times when the Creed can be skipped during Sunday or Holy Day Masses, they are few and far between.

The main reasons I know it can be skipped are:
a) If the rite of sprinkling is used during the Mass.
b) During certain RCIA initiation rites.

The reason the exception is allowed in these situations is because either all or major parts of the Creed are included within the respective rite.

You can always ask the priest why he left it out.

Did you celebrate the Rite of Acceptance (or Welcoming) yesterday? If so, were the candidates for full communion and the catechumens dismissed?

The dismissal of the catechumens and candidates is supposed to be before the Creed is recited. We celebrated that Rite Saturday evening, so our candidates and catechumens went out for their first dismissal. However, at this mass, we prayed the prayers of intersession before their dismissal. As you called yourself a candidate, perhaps this is the case?

If there was a baptism at your church during mass the baptismal rite contains the language of the Creed and the Creed is replaced by the baptismal promises depending on how the baptism is incorpaorated into the mass.

As yesterday was a Sunday, I am sure that it was included in some liturgically appropriate way. (and yes, I know that abuse occurs, but often times what one might think is abuse is not. I like to begin with the position that the liturgy was appropriate until it is clear that it was not)

Was there a lot of confusion at mass that you might have missed it due to distraction?

Ah ha! There was an RCIA candidate who was welcomed into the Church yesterday. She had gone thru last year but didn’t wish to be confirmed b/c she didn’t feel ready. I don’t believe she was a catechumen though. LOL, the older of the priests did the Mass I attended yesterday so I just wanted to make sure, though!

Off topic, but…
So, we are doing the Rite of Acceptance on Dec 4th. After this is when we will start being sent out of Mass? I was wondering… I followed that thread about RCIA cats. and cans. being dismissed and whether or not it’s correct to dismiss candidates. As my church seems to lump us all together for everything else, I would guess we’re all being dismissed together as well. But, I don’t mind as I feel uncomfortable sitting out the Eucharist anyway!

Brian,

There are several reasons for the dismissal. One of which is the historical catechumenate, where they did not attend the Liturgy of hre Eucharist.

In the early church of course there would not have been the candidates (baptized Christian different tradtition) because the church was not yet fractured as we are today.

Our priest explains it this way to the candidates. It is better to dismiss them with the catechuments than to allow them to stay and not be able to join us at the table. Like inviting some family members to Thanksgiving but not letting them have any turkey or pie. You get to see the feast but not join in. It is an embarrassment for both. Better to send you off to feast on the Word of God until we can come together in the Paschal Feast. It is harder on those who stay, because we want you to join us!

The fact that you are dismissed for the Eucharist is following an old Tradition where only people in full communion with the church were allowed to attend the Eucharistic celebration. After awhile that was relaxed.

Now it serves two purposes, to allow you to get additional explanation of the readings and so that you don’t have to feel uncomfortable with saying the Creed and/or the Eucharistic celebration.

There is no problem sitting through the Eucharistic Celebration but until you have finished the program you should not partake of the Eucharist.

Oh, like I said, I don’t mind it at all. As you said, it’s just as uncomfortable to be present and not partake. I’d rather people know the reason I am not joining them rather than suspect something ominous! I fully understand why we are asked to leave and it’s a-ok!

So, back to the creed, did what I said make sense as to a possible explanation?

Chances are there was a renewal of baptismal vows/affimation of faith when the RCIA candidate was received into the Church. The creed gets omitted in such cases…

I know there was an affirmation of faith. Hmm, good to know! It WAS a confusing mass so we didn’t know what was going on. It was the first time my wife and I had both been to the 9:30 mass and we got there with only a minute or two to spare so we sat in the back w/ all the parents w/ small kids. But I knew we wouldn’t have missed the whole Nicene Creed!😃

One time when I was lectoring, the visiting priest finished his homily and sat down to meditate. I noticed he was taken a long time meditating. Then he looked up at me (sitting on the other side of the church) and said, “Aren’t we going to do the petitions?”

A little stunned, I looked back at him and said, “Father, we usually do the Creed first”. With a little embarassment, he stood up, admitted, “Oh, yeah”, and led us into the Creed.

It was a wee bit awkward.

Notworthy

LOL, could’ve been the same priest! I’m just up the road in Shreveport! Nah, he’s a wonderful priest and obviously I just didn’t know what was going on! I can’t wait for that to change! I can honestly say this has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life! God BLESS this church!!!
