Today I went to our neighborhood Catholic church and noticed for the very first time that there was no Jesus. There were statues of Mary, paintings of Mary and a garden in her honor…but no Jesus! I wonder how they can get away with that. Mary must be really saddened by how much emphasis is placed on her in our church. After all, her whole existence was to give birth to the Messiah, not to be worshipped by us. I love her a lot but I understand her place in the Kingdom. We really need to start helping people understand Mary’s real place in the church.

Jesus is LORD!

It’s definately sad when Jesus is passes over. So many forget that it is only through Him that we have our salvation. Did that church have the stations of the cross?

As long as Jesus is located in the central part of the church, I don’t see a problem. With the taberanacle located directly behind the altar with a crucifix above it, all eyes naturally focus on that point. If your church doesn’t have a centrally located tabernacle or crucifix, then that’s probably something that needs to be addressed.

I agree, I’d be upset also. Actually I’m upset enough to do something about it. How do you think the bishop will feel when we all write letters about this Church? Jen, could you please let us know the city and parish? We need to take action!

You must not have looked at the altar, where Jesus is on the Crucifix. You must not have looked at the Blessed Sacrament, where Jesus is present Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity.

Why would Mary be saddened that we honor her? Yes, her whole existence points to Jesus. So, when you see Mary-- you see Jesus. So, everything you pointed out… there is Jesus.

Jesus is not threatened by Mary.

I have in laws who live in Mn…what Church is this…

No crucifix in the sanctuary at all? I think Mary would be saddened if a church knowingly omitted Christ and had everything else, but it does not follow that she is saddened by the whole of the Church for the various Marian devotions and dogmas.

Did you really mean that there is no crucifix over the altar?
If not, there should be.

But aside from that, Jesus is there every day in the tabernacle.
You can visit him anytime. You can receive him at Mass. So it’s not too critical if there are no statues or pictures of a Person who is always there.

I think we should remember that Catholicism is incarnational, it rejoices in the fact that Christ became Man. To be reminded of the humanity of Jesus, through the medium of a crucifix, IS a big deal. And YOU may know He is in the tabernacle, but what of the 2 year old: is his/her mind as ready to deal with this abstraction, or could it use some visual guidance?

Our churches are becoming cold abstractions, they do not uplift, they do not teach, they do not nurture.

This is truly a beautiful answer… She always point to Her Son… Annunciata:)

Jen,
perhaps you didn’t see my reply. I’d like to take action on this. If you would please post the name of the parish and the city we can do something about it.
May the peace and love of our Lord, Jesus the Christ, be with you,
Tom

It’s still not clear to me if Jen is talking about the actual lack of a Crucifix in the sanctuary.

I love Mary, I say the rosary everyday…but I would like to see Jesus emphasized more. He is still infinitely greater than Her.

I also see a problem with a down playing of the Crucifix. In one Church I visited I saw no crucific but they had a cross with the Resurected Chist and a huge banner overhead the altar with the face of Jesus, problem is…He’s got this long flowing hair, He must wash it everyday. No kidding first time I aw it I thought it was a woman! (Who the heck allows a picture like this into our Churches?) and you have to look at it all through Mass, you have no choice. Maybe we are to think that Jesus was somehow part female also?

Bring back the Crucifixes, of a real man on it, not some long haired hippie who resembles my wife more than me!
