This question was asked by my father and we both don’t quite know the answer:

If “it is appointed for men to die once” (Hebrews 9:27), then why aren’t Lazarus and Jairus’ daughter (and any others Jesus brought back from the dead) still walking around with us today?

It’s also appointed that once they die, they don’t come back until the end of the world, right? But Jesus made an exception for Lazarus on that one, so maybe He made an exception in regard to the dying once rule, too, and Lazarus kicked the bucket twice. 🤷

I heard this on CA a few months ago, according to Tradition Lazarus did die again. He became a Bishop I believe, and we do have a record, verified or unverified I’m not sure, of his remains somewhere. So that really wasn’t the most direct answer but in short, he died again.

They died again, because they were not resurrected with glorified bodies. When they died the first time, the gates of heaven were still closed, and so, were in the “Bosom of Abraham”.

Although “it is appointed for men to die once,” you should already know that unless you believe the Holy Spirit was having Paul unwittingly debunk the raising of Lazarus and Jairus’ daughter, then that statement should not be taken to a literalistic extreme where the power of God can interpose itself. Paul also says that “all have sinned,” but, as Catholics, we know that Christ intervened at the Immaculate Conception to preserve Mary from this label, so don’t get hung up on that verse.

When they are resurrected at the general judgment, they will have their glorified, undefilable bodies.

They were not resurrected, they were resuscitated. Therefore, they lived normal human lives after that point.

Jesus raised His eyes, and said, "Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. “I knew that You always hear Me; but because of the people standing around I said it, so that they may believe that You sent Me.” When He had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth.”

~John 11:41-43~

This sign was performed in front of others so that they may believe in him. We only die once, but Jesus is the Son of God and through Him all things were made. The Master of Life proved He had control of life by bringing a man back to life, something only the Creator could do. Resurrection aside, Lazarus came back because Jesus called him back. Simple as that. 👍
