Which apostle do you most identify with?

Pretty self-explanatory. Which apostle do you most closely identify with in your faith life? Please explain why if you care to.

(You can vote for more than one option. I also included St. Paul who wrote many of the epistles and St. Matthias who replaced Judas Iscariot)
 
Ok. I identify most with St. John (for his witnessed love of Christ put into action), St. Paul (for his evangelical spirit) and St. Matthias (for his seemingly random selection as being picked to be an apostle).

By the way, St. Matthias was my chosen confirmation name due to people being less familiar with him and the circumstances on how he became an Apostle (by casting lots).
 
I identify with Peter because he denied Christ 3 times (if only I did it that few times!) and stumbled and fell, and stumbled and fell and still Christ gave him unconditional love. Ultimately, Peter said “Yes” to Christ to the point of death and upside down crucifixion.
 
I feel I identify most with Thomas, because he was the one who doubted, and also from this past Sunday’s reading from John, when he protests that he doesn’t know where Jesus is going.
 
I voted for St. Matthias. I think it’s because I like to think of him as someone who was brought to Christ and then went about doing his job-bringing others to Christ-without any fanfare of notice or anything like that.

So often we hear about the “greats” of our faith. However, I heard someone say something once that has continued to impact my life. “The real work of Christ isn’t done by special folks in special places doing special things. The real work of Christ is done by everyday folks, in everyday places, everyday.” I think this statement is true and that’s how I view Matthias-the “every day” Christian.

Of course, when Jesus was going to raise Lazarus and the other disciples cautioned him that his life was in danger, Thomas’ response was – well then let’s go die with him. (Very rough paraphrase).

So Thomas, called Didymus, 4 said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go to die with him.” John 11:16

I like that as well.
 
I identify with Peter b/c he sinned a lot, had anger issues, denied Christ, hot headed…lol but he made up for it with the extremely devout love he had for Christ. It is nice to know that the man Christ gave the keys of the Church to wasn’t anywhere near perfect but he was devoted…

I love that
 
I’d say both Peter and Paul - they were both pretty hotheaded (no wonder they argued) and both pretty awful in their sinful moments (Peter’s denial, Paul’s persecution). Both nonetheless used by Our Lord for great things, as I hope I will be too.
 
I identify with St. Peter…stumbling, bumbling, saying the wrong thing, St. Peter - yet totally devoted and loyal. He is also, outside of Judas, the apostle whose major offence against Jesus is indeed major…unlike Judas whose repentance lead him to despair…Peter’s repentance brought him to a totally new level of devotion and loyalty. …Blessings - Barb:)
 
Hmmm. . .I voted other. . .I must admit I was fascinated by the movie The Last Temptation of Christ ( I know Catholics hated it and I understand!) and I really identified with Judas in that fictional portrayal.

The duality of Judas is somewhat of me. . .he was really close to Jesus from what I know. . .in the movie, they had spirited debates on spirituality as Jesus preached the Word of God to him. Jesus, when frightened, would fall asleep in his lap (in the movie - I am told the Bible tells us they were close). Judas was protective of him.

Yet, as we all know, he betrayed him. Some hypothesize he was commanded by Jesus to do it. In a way, he was the flawed hero of the Bible, like an Oscar Schlinder.

I don’t know. . .I find him the most interesting apostle.

(or did he lose his apostle status after the betrayal? I don’t know)
 
Paul was a horrible sinner that persecuted Christians, and then one day, God hit him across the face and said “cut it out, I’m real.”

Well, that’s a paraphrase of the road to Damascus, but it fits me more accurately that way 👍

I think a few more people need to be handled in that fashion 😉
 
I have read a book called “A Great Cloud of Witnesses” that tells
about the lives of the apostles. I can’t identify with any of those
brave souls. They are brave, every one.
 
No brainer here for me. It is Matthew. The first Mass I attended as an adult fit my life perfectly. I even took Matthew as my confirmation name.
 
I voted for St. John, because he loved Our Lord… so dearly. (Not that the others didn’t… but John’s love seemed to be so simple… almost child-like). That is how I perceive my own love of Jesus. I know how much God cares for the “simple” 😊

However, I also identify with St. Peter. Because like Peter, I too… am often weak and fearful. But St. Peter has also taught us… our hope is in Our Lord. Because we know that He can take the weakest among us… and do great things. I ask St. Peter to pray for me, sometimes. I should probably ask him more often. St. Peter, pray for us.
 
Peter, definitely. So terribly ill-suited for the plans God had for him. So impulsive in what he said and did. And, despite it all, God used the love in his heart for the good of the kingdom. I pray for the same mercy on my weaknesses.

In particular, when I contemplate the Luminous Mystery of the Transfiguration, I understand Peter’s words so well, because I probably would have said something similar – It is so good for us to be here in this Glory! Let’s stay!
 
St. John - he sees both His Love and His Glory. Rather than say I identify myself with him, lets say that I have always felt most drawn to his Gospel.
I didn’t see that we could vote for more than one until it was too late, however I’ve also felt drawn to St. Andrew without knowing at all why.:confused:

I think Saint Andrew is a bit of an unsung hero. After all, he led Peter to Jesus, and he too was crucified.
