I learned that Catholic Bible’s contain deuterocanonical books and I would like to buy one, ideally a study Bible. I am feeling overwhelmed with trying to find a version that would be good for a first introduction to Catholicism and the Catholic bible. Thank you.

I’d suggest the Didache, if you have the money. It cross-references the Catechism in it.

The New American Bible or the NABRE are good starters if you’re an NIV type…

If you prefer KJV, the Douay-Reims Chancoller is a good equivalent.

The New American is closest to the scripture readings used at Mass in the US, if that matters. The Ignatius Catholic Study Bible is highly regarded for more serious study, and it’s based on the “RSV”

The RSV 2nd Catholic Edition is recommended by many scholars and professional apologists.

That’s an extremely truncated list.

A more fuller list: Catholic Bible - Wikipedia

Any Bible on this list is good to use.

OP - if you’re coming from a Protestant background, I would suggest the RSV-CE/2CE or the ESV-CE.

It’s truncated in the sense that there are other translations available. It’s complete in the sense that according to canon law the appropriate bishops’ conferences are supposed to approve translations and this is the complete list of those approved in the United States.

There’s a note right on the page you linked which says:

"In addition to the translations listed below, any translation of the Sacred Scriptures that has received proper ecclesiastical approval ‒ namely, by the Apostolic See or a local ordinary prior to 1983, or by the Apostolic See or an episcopal conference following 1983 ‒ may be used by the Catholic faithful for private prayer and study. "

I hadn’t noticed that. So I guess like most things, you just need to check inside to see if it has a bishop’s approval.

All the Bibles listed in the Wiki page I linked are approved, I can personally verify that.

I’m a massive Bible geek.

Does that look like the book shelf of someone unfamiliar with Catholic Bibles? 😀

Yes, because there’s a copy of the Catechism in there, which is clearly not a Bible. 😛

Why don’t you just get a Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition. The RSV is a bible that was translated by non-Catholics as well. I like it’s use of English.

Getting a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church would probably be a good idea for you. It has lots of references back to the Bible and the Church Fathers.
