Which bible do YOU use?

I know I am not alone in confusion over which Bible to use. And, I know CAFers have passionate opinions in this area. However, I have not seen a poll posted on which Bible CAFers prefer. All refer to Catholic editions of course. So, here is your chance to vote. Comments welcomed, of course.
 
😦 Sad that this poll does not allow multiple selections (because I use more than one bible). Among them the New American (revised or not, depending on which is handier) and the Douay-Rheims. I have a Confraternity edition around somewhere, but it is too large for comfortable use (and is in need of rebinding).

Also sad that it does not include two that I use frequently, the *Vulgata Clementina *and the Nova Vulgata.

I use the Douay-Rheims Challoner version. I fully recommend it as well as the Confraternity. At this point I recommend no other English Bible than those two. I have not yet read the Knox Translation, but will be looking into the Knox. As for a Latin translation I recommend the Clementine edition.
 
I like the ChallonerDouay Rheims version as well as the RSV. But I have to say I think the Confraternity represents a mixture much akin to what our Holy Father is attempting with Summorum Pontificum, where the new and old mutually enrich each other.

For instance, the Confraternity bible begins with the C-DRV version which is from the Vulgate right? Yet it updates itself with modern scholarship from the original texts as well. If you can find a full version, which I have, the Pentatuch up through Ruth and the Psalms are updated (and very close to the NAB) but the rest is Challoner Rheims.

And by using the Confraternity we keep our Vulgate base while embracing more modern scholarship. Therefore the two enrich each other in way lost in modern translations.
 
I use each to an extent. But I also use the NET Bible, NIV, NIRV, NKJV, as well as a bunch of lesser-known translations.

Mainly the Douay-Rheims-Challoner, but when the archaic style of that book prevents me from understanding something, I look up the corresponding verse in the RSV-CE.

I just like the way the DRC sounds, and the comments are excellent. It’s not a particularly accurate translation compared to what he have nowadays, but I find the language to be much more beautiful, rhythmic, and dignified than that of the RSV. Also it is a translation of the Vulgate, which was a translation that was extremely influential on the development of Church thought (accuracy to the oldest manuscripts notwithstanding).

I thought about multiple posts but I would rather see which is preferred above all else. I too have multiple bibles (a New Jerusalem and a New American) but I like the RSV better. By the way the poll only permits ten options so the many others couldn’t be included. I opted for what seem to be the most commonly available.

I see now that the Poll Question, “Which Bible do you prefer? (all all Catholic Editions)” is different from the Thread Title, “Which bible do YOU use?”

(I could not answer the Poll Question in any case, then, since I do not prefer one edition to the exclusion of others. Or rather: I prefer different editions for different uses and times)

Yeah, That’s a flawed poll, so I really can’t answer it as is.

I personally read the DRV Challoner and the RSV-CE in about equal measure. I have and refer to …

The Bible I generally use is the 1970 New American Bible; the one with rather ‘unconventional’ renderings, but with less distressing footnotes.

I also occasionally use the original Greek and Hebrew (where applicable), the Clementine Vulgate (where applicable), and Douay-Rheims Challoner. Others are the English Standard Version and the New American Standard Bible (Protestant versions, yes, but rather helpful when I want to see literal renderings).

Doesn’t everybody have several for cross reference???

In my house I have quite a few…

Douay-Rheims
Challoner-Rheims
Revised Standard Version (Ignatius)
New Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition
New American Bible *my dd’s for school
*Jerusalem Bible
New International Bible this was my husbands before he converted

I even have a few Good News Bibles in storage somewhere…

I use the douay-rheims the most though I must admit
 
Hi, I am new to the forum, but I have been reading it for a while.
I, like many others (who have posted here) use many translations. They all have their strong points and week points, but overall I
prefer the RSV 2CE. I also use the NAB for bible study and
teching RCIA classes. I also read the Jerusalem Bible for a
change of pace once in a while. I think the NRSV had great
potential to be a very good translation, but I feel they got a little
over zealous with the inclusive language.
 
This is very sad for me. I had no idea there were that many different versions of the Bible that I had never keard of before. Where do you get thos translations. I have never seen them in the christian bookstore (I don’t think)
 
Many Christian bookstores don’t carry a good selection of Catholic
Bibles. You should find a Catholic book store where you can read
the different versions and see which you like best. Borders and
Barnes & Noble also will carry Catholic Bibles in their religion
section. Amazon is a great place to buy, but only if you know
what you want. Hope this helps.
 
I confess, even though it IS Protestant, I still read the NIV at home. Why? Well, I used to be pretty much agnostic, when I became open to the idea of Christ, it was the first Bible I ever bought for myself, whatever flaws it has…it pointed me in the right direction. I am in RCIA! 🙂 🙂 🙂 (For Church I take my RSV Catholic Edition)😃
