The Catholic Controversy by St. Francis de Sales

One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic: The Early Church Was the Catholic Church by Kenneth Whitehead

A controversial one from me…

“The God Delusion” by Richard Dawkins.

In my ‘mixed-up-between-different-Protestant-traditions’ days, C.S. Lewis’ ‘Mere Christianity’ helped straighten me out.

Then the books that pointed me to my longing for Catholicism (I had gone to Catholic High Schools, so although not Catholic, was familiar with the Catholic Mass) - and this may be very surprising: Dan Brown’s ‘Demons and Angels’ and ‘The Da Vinci Code’ - it may have helped that a dear nun was praying for me when she discovered from my daughter that I was reading ‘The Da Vinci Code’ 😉

Rome Sweet Home by Scott Hahn, I’ve read it 3 times, and it gets better every time. It helped me reaffirm my belief in the Church

The Cure’ of Ars

A biography of John Vianney, written in the 1920’s. There are loads of interviews from people that had family members living at the time and witnessed this man, a priest for the priesthood. I’ve read a lot over the years, but seriously…this one blew me off the map. My mom read it and ended up giving it to her parish priest. They are hard to find in good condition, but the miracles…oh the miracles. Astonishing. Life changing.

My all time favorite book is Karl Keatings “Fundamentalism & Catholicism” (PLEASE forgive me if I flubbed the title, it’s been a couple of years since I’ve read it. But this book was the final catalyst for bringing me into the Catholiic Church. I’m overdue in re-reading it.

I too have to put a plug in for the diaries of St. Faustina. Who CAN’T use more mercy? 😃

Catholicism and Fundamentalism, and the book by Tomas Kempis.

“His Time is Short. The Devil and His Agenda” - Rev. Randall Paine
“Imitation of Christ” - Kempis

In addition to the Ignatius Study Bible, Be a Man, The Imitation of Christ and The Devout Life, I am enjoying Sheed’s Theology for Beginners, and enjoyed Fr. Groeschel’s Praying Constantly, as well as Surrender by Fr. Larry Richards.

We’re On a Mission from God: The Generation X Guide to John Paul II, The Catholic Church and the Real Meaning of Life by Mary Beth Bonacci

Reading “Reasons to Believe” by Scott Hahn actually catalyzed my conversion into the Catholic faith. Benedict XVI’s “Spe Salvi” helped me to internalize alot of the faith. “Male and Female he Created them” (or Theology of the Body) by John Paul II did wonders for me!

Some great books to read looking at what people are listing.

To Know Christ Jesus Frank Sheed. Just ordered it! Cheers 👍

Keep listing as this could turn into a great resource for us all!

Except for the Bible, I find Father Thomas de Saint-Laurent’s book “The Book of Confidence”
is very inspiring.

Thanks but i did say in the opening post ‘Besides the Bible’ 😊
I missed that.

But besides that I wasn’t being facetious. One day at a particularly low point in my life I was in a hotel room on a business trip, feeling especially lonely, and hating myself. I picked up the Bible in the night table and started to read the NT.

I made it through 13 chapters of Matthew before I fell asleep. At that point I left behind 22 years of atheism and returned to the faith of my childhood, Catholicism.

So the Bible took me from no faith back to the fullness of the Church.

Surely then, I can’t leave that book off the list, even yours that says “except the Bible”. In fact though I’ve read some good faith-raising books, nothing can top the Bible, but the Rule of St. Benedict still also nourishes me daily.

Great topic. I liked Rome sweet Home, What Catholics really believe by kark Keating,Signs of Life by Scott Hahn; Catholicism and Fundamentalism by Karl Keating; Where Is That In The Bible, by Patrick Madrid. Now I have lots more ideas on good books to read. So thanks!🙂

Rome sweet Home
Creed in slow motion
How far to Bethlehem (fiction, but makes you think)
If protestism is true
One nun’s story
The prisoner in the third cell

Believe it or not, this is not a list of all the books I have read! I have read others, but these have been the most helpful!🙂
