Which Book Increased Your Faith

Reading Autobiography of St Teresa of Avila at present and it is such a wonderful book!!
 
Introduction to Christianity (Joseph Ratzinger), Story of a Soul (St. Therese), St. Augustine’s Confessions, and Catechism of the Catholic Church are the main ones.

Ratzinger said that de Lubac’s Catholicism had a big influence on him, so I’m going to recommend that as well (even though as of now I haven’t read it myself).

And writing my own book which is almost done has increased my faith as well.

“Topics on Tradition,” by Fr. Chad Ripperger, Ph.D.
His descriptions of the graces that flow from the Mass have increased my faith quite a lot.
 
“Orthodoxy” by Chesterton
“Mere Christianity”
“The Lamb’s Supper”

…many more to come. I’m finding myself a lot more interested in reading these days. So much great material out there, so little time.
 
As a kid, it was Fr. Lasance’s Catholic Girl’s Guide (originally given to my mother by her godmother at her Confirmation) and Franz Werfel’s The Song of Bernadette. I also loved Betty Smith’s novel Maggie-Now – later in life I could really identify with Maggie-Now’s struggle with infertility.

Later on I discovered The Story of a Soul. WOW.

The Screwtape Letters and Peter Kreeft’s sequel, The Snakebite Letters. Really, anything by Peter Kreeft, Scott and Kimberly Hahn, and Fulton Sheen.

in a lighter vein, although he’s not Catholic, Phil Robertson’s Happy, Happy, Happy and unPHILtered are very good – and his son Jase’s Good Call is also uplifting.

Also loved My Russian Yesterdays and Poustinia by Catherine de Hueck Doherty.

Okay. But I might have said ‘Summa Theologica’, by Saint Thomas Aquinas. That one would keep anyone out of bookstores for awhile. 🙂
 
I haven’t read any books about Catholicism, but “If Protestantism Is True: The Reformation Meets Rome” by Devin Rose sounds interesting to me. I wonder if I could buy it online. But do you think this book will be easily readable by a non-native English speaker like me? Similar hesitation for “Turning Towards the Lord: Orientation in Liturgical Prayer” by Fr Michael Lang, whose title attracts me as well. 🙂

I’ve read Devin Rose’s book. You can view sample pages on Amazon to see if it’s good or not. I did like his logical take on Protestant claims.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church was a great help for me and is the reason I converted.

I Believe in Love by Fr. Jean d’Elbée was a great help for me. I read it right after I was confirmed and coming out of depression and scrupulosity.

Helps for the Scrupulous by Russell Abata was another great help with my scrupulosity. His short, no nonsense approach to sin helped me see past my fears and to see what was sin and what wasn’t. Also helpful were the 10 Commandments for the Scrupulous articles on the Liguori website.

The Courage to be Chaste by Fr. Benedict Groeschel was insightful and helped me understand what chastity is and isn’t.

And though it isn’t a book, seeing the movie Andrei Rublev when I was in the midst of a deeply anti-religious phase opened me up to the possibility of God. The director’s films changed my view of life.

A book with daily reflections and spiritual treasures. I inherited it from my father. Here is today’s reading:
February 13
NEAR THE GOAL
In a race it is not that start that hurts, not the event pace of the long stretch. It is when the goal is in sight that heart and nerves and courage and muscles are strained almost beyond human endurance, almost to breaking point.

So with you now the goal is in sight, you need your final cry to ME. Can you not see by the nerve and heart rack of the past few days that your race is nearly run. Courage, courage. Heed MY voice of encouragement. Remember that I am by your side, spurring you on to victory.

In the annals of heaven, the saddest records are those that tell of the many who ran well, with brave stout hearts, until in sight of the goal, of victory, and then their courage failed. The whole host of heaven longed to cry out how near the end was, to implore the last spurt, but they fell out, never to know until the last day of revealing, how near they were to victory.

Would that they had listened to ME in the silence as you two meet with ME. They would have known. There must be the listening ear, as well as the still small voice.
Powerful stuff eh? A great daily reader. The last paragraph eludes to the two unnamed authors “…in the silence as you two meet with ME”… I’ll leave the mystery as is. I encourage all to pick this book up. Helps me when I begin to waiver.
