Hello all,

I am a Roman Rite Catholic who is very interested in exploring the spirituality and traditions of my Eastern brothers & Sisters. I am planning on attending my first Divine liturgy soon (maybe next week!) at a Ukrainian Catholic Byzantine church, which is pretty close to where I live.
However, I would love to also visit an Eastern Catholic monastery when time allows, as I have been to plenty of Roman Rite monasteries, but would really be interested in seeing the monastic traditions/practices of the East.

Currently, I have been exploring the possibility of visiting 3 different monasteries here in the US: Holy Transfiguration Skete Society of St. John in Michigan (Ukrainian), Duchovny Dom in Oregon (Ruthenian), & The Maronite monks of Jesus, Mary, & Joseph in Washington (Maronite). I am aware that the first two monasteries celebrate the Byzantine Rite, whereas the latter is the Maronite Rite. I am open to visiting and learning about any of the eastern rites, however, I am most “Familiar” with the Byzantine side of things.

Would anyone recommend visiting either of these places? If so, have you been, and what was your experience? If you have been, would you also be able to inform me of their horarium/Daily schedule? and lastly, what other monasteries would you recommend I go and visit (I would even be willing to visit abroad once international travel is less restricted)?

Lastly, although this is a side question, could anyone who is Maronite provide any good sources about the history of the Maronite Rite and its Traditions? I find the Maronite rite rather beautiful.

Thank you & God bless!

Do you know Monks of Mount Tabor at Holy Transfiguration, in California? I’ve never been there, but I know Fr. Damian from there. He celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the local Melkite church when there was no priest (He himself, I believe, is Ukrainian Greek Catholic). He is now the abbot thereHoly Transfiguration Monastery

I was actually checking out that monastery as well! It looks like a rather nice community over there, and I think they’re related to The community of holy transfiguaruion if I’m not mistaken.

No idea, but Fr. Damian is a cool guy. He forgot to bring me a prayer rope he said he’d give me!

The Byzantine Franciscans are in Sybertsville, PA and the Byzantine Carmelites are in nearby Sugarloaf, PA.

I once visited the Byzantine Carmelites in the hope of discerning a religious vocation.

The Byzantine Franciscans used to have an annual pilgrimage for peace on the first weekend in August (😥 no more).
