Which camp are YOU in?

Thank you for all posters for your generous contributions and
outright indignations!

I started this thread because I want to know what OTHER people
are experiencing being raised OR raising kids, some
families are more well balanced than others, but in the end
we ALL need inter-generational healing(Luke 1:17)!

Why do you say, “We ALL need inter-generational healing.”

I don’t get your point. And what does “inter-generational healing” have to do with choice of child-rearing methods and philosophies? :confused:

I understand that counselling and healing will probably be needed when parents or grandparents make poor choices and abuse their children and/or raise them badly, with the resulting bad outcome and failure of the child to be adequately prepared to enter the adult world.

But if a parent selects a child-rearing method/philosophy, uses it consistently, and the children turn out well and remain on loving terms with their parents, then why is “inter-generational healing” needed?

You might do well to read a book like “Switch: How to Change Things When Change Is Hard,” which explains that humans are motivated not just by intellectual will power to “do the right thing,” but by emotional factors (our animal response to punishment and reward), and by nothing more that simple inertia to do what is easiest in the moment. If you think it disrespectful to ask people to respond to anything other than the promptings of their “best” self (meaning their intellectual desire to pursue “ideals”), you are being too romantic about us by half. To parent in that way sets a child up for failure.

No, I don’t have any kids, but if I ever adopt,
I think I will use a lot of method I and mix it in with
a dose of method II in the Love and fear of God!
