I own the United States Catholic Catechism for Adults by the USCCB, but want to get the Catechism of the Catholic Chruch. Looking online, I’m a bit confused by the different versions. Is this the “right one”: Catechism of the Catholic Church: Second Edition [Hardcover] U.S. Catholic Church (Author) Published March 4, 2003)?

Also, how often is it updated to reflect the chruch’s teaching on evolving moral issues, etc?

Thanks in advance!

Don’t buy one, unless you want one with some extended commentary.

There is only ONE Catechism of the Catholic Church (so named); you can access it for free at this marvelous web-site, where you can also do word searches:

scborromeo.org/ccc.htm

The one to buy is the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition. I presume you are talking about this one: amazon.com/Catechism-Catholic-Church-Second-U-S/dp/0385508190/. That would be the one to get. I think this version replaced the Green one, but the content is all the same.

Basically, when the CCC was first written, it was written in French. Thus, the 1st edition published in 1992 for us English-speakers was a translation from the original French. However, once this edition came out, the Church continued working on an authoritative Latin edition. This came out in 1997. Thus, the second edition is a translation from the now authoritative Latin.

The fact that the one above lists 2003 as the date only indicates the initial publication of that particular version. It’s still the same 2nd edition. It just has a fancy new cover and is now slightly smaller in size (because of the printing, not because any content is missing).

So buy with confidence! 🙂
