Chapter 2: Which Catholicism? “Nothing in my hand I bring” by Ray Galea. Published by Mathias Media in 2007.
The Italian Magazine L’Epresso conducted an interesting experiment by sending its reporters to the confession in 24 Catholic churches across Italy with the intention of seeking the rulings from the local priests on various thorny ethical dilemmas. The results showed a considerable gap between the official teachings of the Catholic Church and the advice given by the priests in the confessional booths. Many priests have different advices on the issue of euthanasia for the patient in vegetative state, embryonic stem cell research, and homosexuality but unanimously, they hold to the official teaching of the church when it comes to abortion.
From my observation, there are indeed different groups such as the traditionalist like St. Pius X society, the Charismatic movements, the Liberation Theology, etc…
“However, you only have to talk to two Catholics - even two Catholic priests - to find that they can have very different views on Catholicism and its teaching. One of the ways in which Catholicism and Protentatism are in fact quite similar these days is that they both contain a wide spectrum of beliefs and attitudes, among both clergy and laity” Ray Galea in his book: “Nothing in my hand I bring”.
Maybe Ray Galea is trying to justify the thousands of protestant denominations and Catholics are not much different from it. I believe this is an absurd comparison but I don’t know how to put my words correctly to refute this in defending the true unity of the Catholic Church. I lost my words. Can you help me? Thanks.
