I believe that the best action a person with same-sex attraction can take is a commitment to chastity.
That’s easy to say for me and you being heterosexual sexual beings. To me, it’s the same issue for prohibitting marriage within Catholic clergy (nuns, bishops, priests, etc). Some homosexual Christians and some Catholic clergy are granted the gift of celibacy. However, not all Christian homosexuals and not all Catholic clergy are granted the gift of celibacy. It is clear that the Apostle Paul instructed those inside the church who do not have to give of celibacy to marry (1 Cor 6-8). We all know the Apostle Peter was married according to the Scriptures. We live in a fallen world. Why did God allow divorce according to Jesus?

All are called to chastity.

There is no such thing as divorce for those validly married.

I thought divorce in the Catholic Church is no longer a mortal sin. Help me understand the difference between an annulment and a divorce, because they appear to be the same thing from my perspective.

Matthew 19

Teaching About Divorce

19:1 Now when Jesus had finished these sayings, he went away from Galilee and entered the region of Judea beyond the Jordan. 2 And large crowds followed him, and he healed them there.

3 And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful to divorce one’s wife for any cause?” 4 He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, 5 and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? 6 So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” 7 They said to him, “Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce and to send her away?” 8 He said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. 9 And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.” [1]

10 The disciples said to him, “If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry.” 11 But he said to them, “Not everyone can receive this saying, but only those to whom it is given. 12 For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let the one who is able to receive this receive it.”

Thanks for the link. I glanced at it, but to me an annulment is just a Catholic divorce. As you can see with the verse about divorce, according to Jesus

Even if divorce or a Catholic annulment were allowed because of hardness of heart, then homosexual marriage would be permitted in line with the annulment. Both divorce and homosexuality are products of the fall, yet there is allowance within our fallen nature. You can see this with the multiple wives with Abraham, Issac, and Jacob. Marriage is between one man and one woman. However, multiple wives were allowed… maybe because a hardness of the heart… or lack of faith in Sarah’s case. There is a link between the topic of divorce and same sex marriage to me.

Good call, mate, as the thread is in danger of floundering in polemics.
Also, Religious marriage rites fall under the protection of the First Amendment here in the US. Therefore the government cannot force Religious institutions to preside over, or recognize, homosexual ‘marriages’ or any other type, aside from those between 2 consenting adult individuals of opposite genders from each other, and not blood related.
I agree. And more and more, as civil government changes the nature and definition of marriage, I question whether the Church - mine and yours - is doing marriage a disservice by cooperating with civil authorities when requiring a civil marriage license.

Do you work as a taffy puller? That’s the most unbelievable stretch ever.

Instead of just glancing at the link and then continuing in your previous line of thought, why not read it and learn what the Church actually teaches?

I’m not Catholic, therefore I adhere to Scripture Alone for faith and practice of the Chrstian life.

Oh? How so?
I hope everybody realizes this poll is stacked since this is a Catholic Forum site. Here’s an answer to your question:

Matthew 4

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written,

“‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
2 Tim 3

All Scripture Is Breathed Out by God

You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra—which persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me. Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.

John 17

“I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you. For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them. And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sake I consecrate myself, [3] that they also may be sanctified [4] in truth.

For Protestant truth - Scripture is God breathed, and is the Word of God which is truth.

For Catholic Truth - Sacred oral tradition (+) Sacred written tradition (Scripture + all other written tradition that is considered sacred).

The Westminster Confession of Faith is a good explanation in what I believe in regards to Scripture as being authorative. You don’t have to agree with me, but it’s nice to know that we understand how we both discern truth. I believe our differences come to down to our view of Scripture and understanding of justification. We may not fit theologically as Catholics and Protestants, but I think we understand that those who are truly united to Christ are true brothers and sisters in Christ in spite of our christian communities and doctrinal distinctives that divides us on this side of glory.

Chapter I
Of the Holy Scripture

I. Although the light of nature, and the works of creation and providence do so far manifest the goodness, wisdom, and power of God, as to leave men unexcusable;[1] yet are they not sufficient to give that knowledge of God, and of His will, which is necessary unto salvation.[2] Therefore it pleased the Lord, at sundry times, and in divers manners, to reveal Himself, and to declare that His will unto His Church;[3] and afterwards for the better preserving and propagating of the truth, and for the more sure establishment and comfort of the Church against the corruption of the flesh, and the malice of Satan and of the world, to commit the same wholly unto writing;[4] which makes the Holy Scripture to be most necessary;[5] those former ways of God’s revealing His will unto His people being now ceased.[6]

II. Under the name of Holy Scripture, or the Word of God written, are now contained all the books of the Old and New Testament, which are these: Of the Old Testament: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, Ruth, I Samuel, II Samuel, I Kings, II Kings, I Chronicles, II Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, The Song of Songs, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi. Of the New Testament: The Gospels according to Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, The Acts of the Apostles, Paul’s Epistles to the Romans, Corinthians I, Corinthians II, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, Thessalonians I , Thessalonians II , To Timothy I , To Timothy II, To Titus, To Philemon, The Epistle to the Hebrews, The Epistle of James, The first and second Epistles of Peter, The first, second, and third Epistles of John, The Epistle of Jude, The Revelation of John. All which are given by inspiration of God to be the rule of faith and life.[7]

III. The books commonly called Apocrypha, not being of divine inspiration, are no part of the canon of the Scripture, and therefore are of no authority in the Church of God, nor to be any otherwise approved, or made use of, than other human writings.[8]

IV. The authority of the Holy Scripture, for which it ought to be believed, and obeyed, depends not upon the testimony of any man, or Church; but wholly upon God (who is truth itself) the author thereof: and therefore it is to be received, because it is the Word of God.[9]

V. We may be moved and induced by the testimony of the Church to an high and reverent esteem of the Holy Scripture.[10] And the heavenliness of the matter, the efficacy of the doctrine, the majesty of the style, the consent of all the parts, the scope of the whole (which is, to give all glory to God), the full discovery it makes of the only way of man’s salvation, the many other incomparable excellencies, and the entire perfection thereof, are arguments whereby it does abundantly evidence itself to be the Word of God: yet notwithstanding, our full persuasion and assurance of the infallible truth and divine authority thereof, is from the inward work of the Holy Spirit bearing witness by and with the Word in our hearts.[11]

VI. The whole counsel of God concerning all things necessary for His own glory, man’s salvation, faith and life, is either expressly set down in Scripture, or by good and necessary consequence may be deduced from Scripture: unto which nothing at any time is to be added, whether by new revelations of the Spirit, or traditions of men.[12] Nevertheless, we acknowledge the inward illumination of the Spirit of God to be necessary for the saving understanding of such things as are revealed in the Word:[13] and that there are some circumstances concerning the worship of God, and government of the Church, common to human actions and societies, which are to be ordered by the light of nature, and Christian prudence, according to the general rules of the Word, which are always to be observed.[14]

Chapter XI
Of Justification

I. Those whom God effectually calls, He also freely justifies;[1] not by infusing righteousness into them, but by pardoning their sins, and by accounting and accepting their persons as righteous; not for any thing wrought in them, or done by them, but for Christ’s sake alone; nor by imputing faith itself, the act of believing, or any other evangelical obedience to them, as their righteousness; but by imputing the obedience and satisfaction of Christ unto them,[2] they receiving and resting on Him and His righteousness by faith; which faith they have not of themselves, it is the gift of God.[3]

II. Faith, thus receiving and resting on Christ and His righteousness, is the alone instrument of justification:[4] yet is it not alone in the person justified, but is ever accompanied with all other saving graces, and is no dead faith, but works by love.[5]

III. Christ, by His obedience and death, did fully discharge the debt of all those that are thus justified, and did make a proper, real and full satisfaction to His Father’s justice in their behalf.[6] Yet, in as much as He was given by the Father for them;[7] and His obedience and satisfaction accepted in their stead;[8] and both, freely, not for any thing in them; their justification is only of free grace;[9] that both the exact justice, and rich grace of God might be glorified in the justification of sinners.[10]

IV. God did, from all eternity, decree to justify all the elect,[11] and Christ did, in the fullness of time, die for their sins, and rise again for their justification:[12] nevertheless, they are not justified, until the Holy Spirit does, in due time, actually apply Christ unto them.[13]

V. God does continue to forgive the sins of those that are justified;[14] and although they can never fall from the state of justification,[15] yet they may, by their sins, fall under God’s fatherly displeasure, and not have the light of His countenance restored unto them, until they humble themselves, confess their sins, beg pardon, and renew their faith and repentance.[16]

VI. The justification of believers under the Old Testament was, in all these respects, one and the same with the justification of believers under the New Testament.[17]

None of that proves your point, in fact it’s circular reasoning.

That’s easy to say for me and you being heterosexual sexual beings. To me, it’s the same issue for prohibitting marriage within Catholic clergy (nuns, bishops, priests, etc).
I think I responded to this issue on another thread in which you are participating. I think there’s nothing similar at all about the two issues. No one is forced to be a celibate priest. One answers a call to the vocation… and celibacy is part of the mix in discerning the vocation. One should not become a priest if one is not committed to a life of celibacy. God does not call anyone to a vocation that they cannot keep.
2d Adam:
Some homosexual Christians and some Catholic clergy are granted the gift of celibacy. However, not all Christian homosexuals and not all Catholic clergy are granted the gift of celibacy.
Baloney! Giving up something good like sex is hard for everyone. To suggest otherwise is naive. If there is a priest who *cannot *keep his vows, then he was never called to the priesthood. If there is a priest who weakens to the point that he chooses to break his vows… it is his choice CONTRARY to God’s will and grace; NOT because God did not give him the grace to remain celibate. What you suggest is that God has called some men to be priests without giving them the ability to maintain their vows. Do you really think God would do such a thing?
2d Adam:
It is clear that the Apostle Paul instructed those inside the church who do not have to give of celibacy to marry (1 Cor 6-8). We all know the Apostle Peter was married according to the Scriptures. We live in a fallen world.
So, they should marry if they cannot be priests. I agree. But I do not think Paul was suggesting that men who have same sex attraction can avoid sexual sin by first entering into a committed relationship that is not a union of male and female. There simply is nothing in the scriptures that would sanction such a union, and there is much that shows that even consented-to sex between two people of the same gender is sinful. (Jude 1:7)
2d Adam:
Why did God allow divorce according to Jesus?
I think the answer is that God tolerated it because of the hardness of peoples’ hearts, but from the beginning it was not so. (Mt. 19:8) The same may be true of homosexuality today. Christians living in a free society must tolerate the fact that it is allowed, but we cannot bury our heads in the sand and pretend that such acts (while tolerated) are moral.

Peace,
Robert

So what does that prove? 🤷
It proves that everything was Catholic in belief 2,000 years ago. My signature states that St. Peter was the first pope long before the year 100 A.D., which proves this. Get it?

No I don’t (get it). Scripture doesn’t get it either nor does it support it.

Jimmy B,

I read an interesting wiki article about Gay Bishops. It notes one in Catholic history that installed his lover as Bishop of Orleans (iirc) and that the Pope ignored it. It also notes Cardinal Spellman’s alleged homosexuality and alleged relationship. In addition, we need not go into the many media reports of homosexual relationships among Roman Catholic clergy. In fact, I think I even recall EWTN mentioning the concern the church had about homosexuality in the seminaries. The Wiki article mentions other modern Roman Catholic Bishops who are gay. It also links another Wiki article with an estimate of gay Roman Catholic priests at around 33%.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gay_bishops

I think the point is that even if the Roman Catholic Church does not officially support gay marriage there has been what some allege as an existent gay sub culture and one that has gone on for some centuries. Robert Weakland of course being the latest Catholic Bishop to come out of the closet. He has written his autobiography.

I am certainly not implying that you (Jimmy) have been smug but others have sometimes pointed the finger at sexuality issues within other denominations when the Roman Catholic Church itself has struggled at all levels with the same issues. Human nature and sin I suppose.
