This is often misreported and misrepresented as a sort of “the sky is falling”/“we are disappearing” sort of story…It seems that the Catholic Chruch is worried about how many people are leaving the church. They recently had a meeting of the Cardinals in Roman to discuss the problem. There was a artical about if in our local newspaper
And I don’t buy it. Don’t believe everything you read. But this article says that it is in Africa, Asia and South America that the most defects are happening.
In fact vocations in Latin America are at an all time high, and the church grew from 700M to over 1.1B during the pontificate of JP2. In Mexico and Latin America, lay apostolates comparable in scope and mission to Catholic Answers have popped up left and right to counter the claims of Protestant sects that have seen Catholic Latin America as “Mission Territory”.
Growth in China has been phenomenal, as well as in many other ares such as Africa and South East Asia. Interestingly, some reports I have read have suggested that in Korea, for example, Protestant and Catholic growth has largely NOT been at expense of “flock stealing” - people who convert to protestant ecclesial communities or the Catholic Church are largely coming from non-Christian backgrounds.
There is always work to be done, but I would not buy into the hype that some offer that we are disappearing ANY time soon.
