I am currently a Junior at another college studying music. The faculty knows me and respects me very well for both my hard work habits and musical abilities. But ever since my freshman year I have not been a fan of attending this school. I cannot explain why but I just feel I could do more somewhere else. Then earlier this year after taking extreme advantage of what this currents schools musical education programs I felt a feeling that it was time to transfer to another school that has a much better performance program and could help me way more than this other school can. I was planning on transferring but this morning I woke up with this strange feeling of doubt in it, that I should stay here. I feel that if I stay here I can do everything I want to do here at this time and graduate with honors, but if I transfer since it will be a bigger school that I will not stand out as much but I may have a better chance at doing what I want to do after college. I have prayed alot on this but it seems I still cannot find the answer. Prayers if possible and thoughts on my situation please?

Hi there,

Shoot for the long haul…attend a college where you’ll be happy and yo have a good chance of getting a job upon graduation. Many people think that “standing out” during one’s college years is necessary; actually, unless you’re looking to get into certain graduate schools or pursue certain advanced degrees, no one really cares “where you stood” in college. It’ll be the degree that counts. So rather than focusing on how you’ll appear while in college, take that energy so it can help you afterwards. College is fleeting, but your career can last a lifetime.

If you have been convinced since you were a freshman that the school will not get you to your goals, why have you stayed this long? Don’t doubt or second-guess - go with your inner convictions. Have you applied at the other university? Have you talked to anyone over there? I would go and make sure it’s the place you think it is. Talk to some recent graduates of the program you would be entering - are they finding work? Do they believe that the program benefited them and would they recommend it?

Does your current school have a good record of placing graduates? What do the advisors say about your situation?

I really think you should already have transferred, but when you do, make sure ALL your credits will transfer, you don’t want to have to re-take any classes.

You may need to talk this over with some people in your field that you respect and trust. Now, more than ever, the ability to be employed is very important and the facts about this are available from most schools. Your gut is a reliable source in decision making but you should balance your feelings with facts. God bless you.

If transferringis going to add semesters or debt, I would advise staying right where you are.

This…

Research other schools and go and talk to an advisor to see if your credits will transfer. If they do and you’ll still be on track for graduation on time…fill out an application.

If not…I don’t see how it would really benefit you in the long run. You’ve only got 3 semesters left it seems.
