Which decade do you wish you could live in?

For me, it would the 1980’s. You had Reagan as President, Pope John Paul II, and Margaret Thatcher as Prime Minister. There was more common sense politics back then too. You also got to see movies like Indiana Jones, Ghostbusters, Beverly Hills Cop, Batman, Beetlejuice, etc. In sports, teams like 49ers won the Superbowl four times. The Oakland A’s owned other teams in the late 80’s and won a World Series. There’s a whole bunch of stuff that went on in the 80’s that my parents got to see but I didn’t, feel so cheated.
 
The eighties sound good for the reasons you mentioned.I was also in my thirties,we were making great $$$$ and in good health. However I have a special fondness for the late fifties and sixties since those were my childhood years.And I love 60,s music;)
 
The current one. It’s very easy to reminisce over the good old days and gloss over the downsides, or overlook the good things about today. I can still listen to all the music from the prior decades, and I can youtube the videos/audios of folks performing all the songs I enjoy- including recordings of the old blues artists back in the day …
 
I will rank them.

30s (AD.)

80s 1480s Rome
80s 1880s The west.
80s 1980s America.
and a couple decades from now. Because after it gets worse, it is going to get better.

Why would you pick today? Things were a lot better back in the 80’s than they are now. Politics weren’t as partisan, people still voted with common sense, the country was strong compared to today.

Agreed. People, especially fellow Catholics, act like certain eras were golden ages of culture and morality. I don’t buy it. Humans were no less sinful 50, 500, or 5000 years ago than they are today.

Medieval knights were drunken lechers and brutes (just ask St. Joan of Arc).

Renaissance popes were corrupt.

The time between the end of WWII and Vatican II was a jolly soiree that included racism, spousal abuse, the Black Dahlia murder, a rise in consumerism and Playboy, and the fear of nuclear annihilation.

I, for one, am happy to be a millenial. This is my generation, and I love it like a country or hometown sports team.

While the '80s did include Reagan, the Royals winning the '85 World Series, and the proliferation of video games, a lot of people don’t remember what was bad about it (granted I was born in 1992). A lot of people lost their jobs, popular culture was at its zenith of hedonism and immorality, and let’s not forget the sex abuse scandal in the Church.

Yeah. Sometimes I wish I could just live in a fantasy mashup of all medieval decades instead of the historical ones. 😊 (At least drunken knights don’t matter much when you could just turn them all into sheep.)

Same here. When people tell me to just focus on one, real, historical period, I’d go nowhere beyond the one we’re currently living in. For me, it kinda feels cool to be in the generation that gets to see the future on their doorstep… all from just from tapping a screen or clicking a mouse. :cool:
 
The 1980s! MTV was good; all the ladies wore big hair; the stock market was roaring, and the NY Mets (!) were great (and they did it with swagger!)

And best of all, the USA had a REAL president.

“Popular culture was at is zenith of hedonism and immorality…” As opposed to today? Have you seen what’s going on today? People for gay marriage, illegal immigration, everything is me, me, me. It’s all hip and trendy stuff. I was born in 1988 and I don’t wish to live in this generation. We were more politically and morally united back in the 80’s. Sure, there were problems back then but not like now. Also, the music was better back then. Originality ended in the 90’s after Grunge.

Well, a generation that is connected world-wide, not reliant entirely on the news from a few sources. This thread right here- folks from across the world discussing an issue from whatever computer/device they can access.

Maybe. But 8 years of Obama, And 8 years of Hillary. is going to make for interesting times… On the other hand there is an excellent chance we could be martyred.

I’m just sad for those who are not allowed to be born into the next decade. The millions of them…

I think you are looking at things through rose-colored glasses. I lived through the 80s and it wasn’t any different than today, just different topics in the headlines. One thing I do remember well is that every neighborhood video rental store had a room full of porn for the “morally united” to delve into every night. While the music was certainly much funner than today, it isn’t enough to make me want to turn back the clock. Besides, you will eventually end up where we are today anyway. For me, the 80s were from about 1983 when Bille Jean debuted to around 1988 when the “hat acts” of country music started to dominate. It wasn’t that long and it wasn’t that great.

I don’t know why everyone just assumes that Hillary Clinton is just going to walk into the presidency. People are obviously not reading the articles about how she is not liked by those in the democratic party for being too much of a centrist. Their hero is Elizabeth Warren who is way too far left to be electable. Remember that everyone thought in 2008 that Clinton was the heir apparent when a completely unknown by the name of Obama upstaged her.

You have a better view of the american public than I do. They will vote because they want to see the first woman president. Obama did not win because people knew what he stood for or what he wanted to do. He won because pop culture wanted him to. Same here. It is a slam dunk.

The only way the republicans win is Condi Rice who is pro choice…🤷
