It seems like the old “either/or” and not “both/and” is here again. What I discovered while becoming Catholic is that the Catholic Church has a much deeper thought process when it comes to Theology and explaining Scripture and morals. It shows in how the words are used in the Greek context that the NT writers were coming from.

Some of the most common comments that I hear, here in Sweden, from protestant priests and pastors, regarding both ordained and lay Catholics are that we are learned, have a different perspective on things and sometimes a totally different way of expressing ourselves than other Christians. I have taken part in some of the ecumenical meetings in the local area and there is an admiration of the educational tradition and thinking within the Catholic Church. I would say that faith and reason combined is the clue compared to just faith. Also reasoning around a possible decision, taking a different perspective and seeing the consequences of a decision on several levels is more typical for the Catholic Church than the other ecclesial denominations.

It is only a couple of years ago that basic Philosophy was introduced to the study programme for future protestant priests and pastors at one of the university colleges here in Sweden.

We need Christians NOT philosophers
So… “what has Athens to do with Jerusalem?”, then…?

Tertullian beat you to the punch with that one millennia ago. It was as unprofitable a stance then as now… 😉

I’m not sure what this has to do with anything I’ve said. I can love Jesus and love philosophy. Philosophy is the love of wisdom. Jesus is associated with wisdom in Scripture. Philosophy can lead us to Jesus.
thank you for affirming, and your reasoning, a thought “that it may help” This…Philosophy can lead us to Jesus.
my hope

The prologue of John’s Gospel begins:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
“Word” comes from the Greek logos, which to ancient philosophers was the rational principle that ordered the whole universe. John associates Jesus with this rational principle. Logos has a variety of meanings and valid translations, it’s sort of a loaded term. It could even be rendered something like “rationality.” So God himself is identified with reason and rationality. Thus one who seeks to know truth by reason could arrive at God himself. Look to the writings of Plato and Aristotle, look at how they conceive of the universe in a nearly Christian-sounding way. Part of that is the fact that Christianity (and Catholicism in particular) adopts a lot of their language and ways of thinking about things (our moral philosophy in particular is heavily drawn from Aristotle’s Ethics). But part of that is that these philosophers abandoned the old pagan gods in favor of the truth that reason led them to, and thus they came very close to knowing the one whom we call God.

I don’t understand the original question. Are you looking for a philosophy book for a non-religious 19-year-old? Is the intention to get him to consider being Catholic?

5 proofs for the existence of God by Edward fezer hardcore Mabey too hardcore if so why were catholic by Trent horn and answering atheism

St Edith Stein converted to Catholicism because of philosophy. I think she was a teacher in philosophy, and since it searches for the truth, she finally found Jesus.

I’m a philosophy major, and I’m discerning the priesthood. What is your aversion to philosophy? It exists as a natural means of knowing God and His creation. What’s wrong with that?

I agree with something by Dr. Kreeft. Both for the understanding he sets forth, and for the easy (to our age) language he uses.

That was my Phil 101 textbook. The author gives two readings per subject, usually one pro, one con. It helps students learn how philosophy should be done. And he doesn’t try to push his own thoughts on the subjects.
