Which mass takes precedence in the calendar of John XXIII: the Sunday mass (18th after Pentecost) or the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, and why?

Thanks

Good question …

While I personally hope it will be the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, I am unable to answer your question and will wait to see an answer from someone more knowledgeable.

According to the Ordo published by the FSSP, it is the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. I am not 100% positive, but I think it is because the Exaltation has a higher rank then the Sunday after Pentecost.
Although he is not a member of the FSSP, I know our Latin Mass chaplain goes by their Ordo and is planning on saying the Mass of the Exaltion of the Holy Cross tomorrow.

Hi TP, it’s the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. ( Class II Feast)

Any first or second class Feast may replace the Sunday Mass when it falls on Sunday. The exceptions of course would be Sundays of first class. For example, the four Sundays of Lent.

Had EF Mass today. Venerated a relic of the True Cross after mass, copes and all! 😃

Ah, you are blessed 👍

Today will be the first time I will assist at an EF for this Feast day. I’m hoping we will have a relic of the True Cross also.

Alleluia, alleluia! V.
O sweet wood, O sweet nails! O precious the burden suspended thereon! You alone are worthy to bear the king and Lord of heaven. Alleluia!

Any First and Second Class feast of the Lord may replace a Sunday of the II Class. II Class feasts of the saints do not replace the Sunday.

AJV,

I was hoping you’d respond.

It’s not obvious to me why today’s feast is “of the Lord.” Rather it seems (to me) better to classify it as the feast of a holy relic. How am I mistaken? Is there a list of feasts of the Lord?

Hi AJV, thanks for the correction 🙂 And sorry for the slow reply. We’ve been without power for a few days. Ike got it’s last licks in up our way 😦
