Which faith community do you think is the most misrepresented and misunderstood?

I have no doubt that in some parts of the US Catholics might take a beating from some of the non-denominationals and Baptist groups, ironic always to me because they ally perfectly on abortion and gay rights as the ONLY issues of import,.
LOL. That reminds me of a funny joke I heard on The Simpsons. Homer, who had converted to catholicism, was fighting with Marge, Flanders, and Rev Lovejoy about what church Bart would go too. After both sides reconciled because “it’s all christianity”, Flanders says, “Now we can join forces to fight the real enemies of Christ: monogomous gays and stem cells.”😃

Two points.

First, there is only one issue: the sanctity of life. We agree it is to be protected from birth to natural death. We “ally perfectly” iagainstf the evil that denies this truth.

Second, so, we ally on that issue. So what? Churchill and Stalin “allied” against the evident evil that was the Nazis. But after 1945 - even a bit before, when the Nazis were clearly beaten, they put upon each other.

So I don’t see a logical case for the presence of irony.

And as Archbishop Sheen observed about 70 years ago, there are millions who hate what they think the Catholic Church is, and not only has that continued, it’s become fashionable. That’s misrepresentation. I don’t think there’s much of a desire to understand the Church. The made up stories are so much more fun. Jack Chick stuff still sells. What other group has been so misrepresented by such an enterprise?

Blessings,

Gerry

LOL, I believe I have a fair understanding of Catholic belief and understand pretty good what it is they believe…and I have no desire to be Catholic.
How come you did not join. In the words of someone very dear to me that is converting, “You know, now that I understand I cannot help but wonder why anyone with a rational mind don’t become Catholic?” I was stunned and shrug cause honestly it boggles my mind. Why would you not hug God back when his arms are so warm and welcoming?

By whom? And of course, misunderstanding isn’t the same thing as distaste. Many religions get a lot of inquiries from seekers drawn to what just isn’t really there.
Where I live, Buddhism, Hinduism and Paganism get loads of affectionate interest from people who think they are all as old as humanity, perfectly peaceful and free of scary history, free-wheeling, with free love traditions going back to the dawn of mankind, etc. and when they find out that the more the group they meet matches that description, the further removed it is from the roots of those religions, they are disillusioned.
The Religious Society of Friends has had an uphill climb to be understood as a standard Evangelical denomination with only three differences: less authority for pastors, a short quiet time/open worship period during service, and no required bodily baptism or communion. Of course, this is because the more conspicuous, but smaller, branches of the Friends movement get more attention. But it seems to me a nice courtesy to mention to the curious how one’s movement fits into its history, and whether there is a larger group with the same common name. 🤷 In my city there have been newspaper articles and such things where Unprogrammed Friends explained what it means to be a Freind, and they, the minority, were describing something that has little to do with the RSF or Fox’s ideas as recorded in his lifetime. It used to annoy us a lot.
Most people hear Pentecostal and think of isolated cabin snake handlers or glitzy televangelists preaching fantastic wealth. In reality most Pentecostals are nowhere near either end of the spectrum, they’re just faith-filled, excited Christians and yes, there is a balacing act between austerity and prosperity teaching but most communties stay well away from the extremes almost all the time.
Pentecostals prayer-walking and doing street evangelism are often attacked and told they are “harassing” or even “aggressive” and all they are doing is praying and sharing the gospel. They don’t often accost anyone physically as passersby soemtimes do to them.
For all the problems in the movement, and there are big ones, it’s not the weirdness some make it sound like.

At least where I live, I’m going to have to say the Oriental Orthodox. Eastern Orthodox people (primarily Russians) have been here for a loooong time, but the Oriental Orthodox are primarily Ethiopians and Eritreans. They have their own culture, they keep their languages (probably because they are new enough that it is unlikely that there are any individual members who are second generation Americans yet), and their form of Christianity is very different than the dominant Protestantism or Roman Catholicism of the area (which was occupied first by the Spanish, then the Russians, then the Mexicans, then the Americans, and some would say now again the Mexicans :)). I have unfortunately been within earshot of more than a few comments by ignorant ferenji about how horribly oppressive it is that their women wear the “hijab” (we’re talking about Orthodox women here!), questions about their “pagan” Christianity (in response to pictures of the Church of St. George in Lalibela that decorate the walls of a local restaurant), etc. It boggles the mind! Sure, they’re a relatively new community, but not that new, and even if they were that’s no excuse for ignorance.

Is it,

Adventists?
Anglicans?
Arminians?
Baptists?
Buddhists?
Catholics?
Calvinists?
Episcopalians?
Hindus?
Jehovah’s Witnesses?
Jews?
Latter–day Saints?
Lutherans?
Methodists?
Muslims?
Orthodox Christians?
Pentecostals?
Presbyterians?
Quakers?
Other?

Feel free to give solid examples of misrepresentations and misunderstandings to support your opinion and perhaps even offer gentle correction to wayward ideas so as to provide an opportunity for us all to better understand one another.

Respectfully,
Mick

In all my dealings and changing denominations it would be the Reformed (Calvinist) they are misunderstood from Protestants and Catholics. Misunderstandings include (but are not limited to) Eternal Security, Sola Scriptura and a host of others

I have found the Everlasting Arms quite secure among Friends. Of course, I may not have a “rational mind” either…that is a distinct possibility…or so I’ve been told.🙂

Just glancing at the threads of “Why Mormons Don’t…”…I’d have to say Mormons more than most Christian groups are the most misunderstood…even to the point of other Christians denying them the name “Christian.”
They are misunderstood far as poeple lacking the knowledge of just how dangerouse the Mormon occolt is! As an ex-mormon I can confirm that the requirements to be christians are not held by the LDS

And yet the “basic requirements” Jesus indicated, at least in my opinion, to “love God” and “love your neighbor as yourself” is a basic requirement those Mormons I know hold.

I see them offering water to the thirsty, food to the hungry, clothes to the naked and a kind word to those in need of it…to me…is the basic requirement to being a Christian.

As a Friend, I have a different idea than most who call themselves “Christian”…what being a “Christian” means…I would rather heed my own counsel on the matter than any one elses.(aka human)🙂

There charity is a tool for them to use to teach there false doctrine! Such teachings is damning towards ones soul which is not loving ones neighbor. There are allot of christian beliefs and they all hold some truths but Mormon is an occolt and does not hold any truths of christ!

Some of the best social commentary comes from Homer! lol

I don’t understand. Please enlarge and explain.

Cautiously,

Couple of observations:

For the most part, most conservative Catholics don’t find war a problem and they don’t find the death penalty a problem. That does cut into your “from conception to natural death.”

Second, if you can make friends with natural enemies for a common enemy, then why don’t you make friends with pro-choicers who want to reduce abortions by things like helping poor women who wish to carry to term, making broad based sex education available because it works, helping those who wish to adopt?

There is a bill introduced that does all that and makes contraception available and NO right to lifer organization will support it. Why? because 20% of the pro-life movement is against contraception so it will not help in any means to reduce abortions. Eighty percent of pro-lifers are for contraception, but the 20% control the organizations and won’t lift a finger to actually reduce abortion. They want to impose religious notions on abortion (a thorougly Catholic notion) upon everyone. Thus who really is trying to reduce abortions?

“Charity is a tool…” Perhaps you are seeking to use the word “cult” instead of “occult”…I have found one truth of Christ they share, and that is charity. Perhaps we could all learn to be charitable…that is one tool I would wield gladly.🙂

Instead of babbling how about a logical no bs response! You know what I mean by tool! Yes Mormons use charity as a TOOL to increase there numbers! I would know! i am not and never have been a quaker, but since I know one down the road, let me go ahead and tell you whats really going on with them! (sounds a little dumb huh?) There are many wolves in sheeps clothing claiming to do the works of God and yes Mormon is one of the big bad wolf’s

He wasn’t “babbling” - he (and I) were trying to point out to you that your spelling and grammar may keep people from understanding the points you are trying to make. You may want to proofread your posts before you send them. Thank you.

Was I babbliing? I only know the truth about Mormons from the Mormons I know…they are kind, loving and gentle…it’s a good thing in Christ the “lion will lay down beside the lamb”…maybe the “wolf” will be able to share in the group hug.🙂

Friend, I understand that Mormon belief is at odds with Catholic belief and Quaker belief too…but I don’t judge a man based on the religious traditions they follow…if I make a judgement about someone, it’s based on how they treat the “stranger within their gates”. I have been “within their gates” and I have been treated with kindness and forebearance. I’ve missed the “big bad wolf” part.🙂

Many religions have disagreements but the lds doctrine teaches that God was once a man, jesus is a seperate God, and that Mormons can achieve becoming a god one day themselves! in a closed room these things are spoken bluntly, but in public they are carefully spoken about to deceit others! this teachings are simply dangerouse and MAIN POINT being is that Mormons are absolutey not christian! they are an ocult!
