Which genre of film is your favorite?

I think mine is a good mystery, such as Agatha Christie films. Which one do you prefer above all others: romance, musical, science fiction, horror, thriller, suspense, drama, comedy, religious, action, animation, documentary?
 
I like shows dealing with forensics and mysteries such as Unsolved Mysteries, Forensic Files etc.

It is going to depend on my mood for that particular day. Casablanca, Citizen Kane, Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone), the Maltese Falcon, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Cleopatra, Lawrence of Arabia, War and Peace are all great movies, but sometimes the comedies of Mr. Bean are more fun to watch. Also, I sometimes like to watch action movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark, James Bond 007, or the Transporter.
 
When I was a teenager growing up in the 60’s I liked musicals and comedies the most.

Now that I am older I like mysteries especially from the early years of Hollywood. I like suspense and thrillers. I did not like Gone Girl though. That was stupid.

I don’t like romantic comedies as much anymore.

I wish they could make good horror movies without gore and blood and sadistic killings.

I like a lot of foreign and independent films.

“It Follows” is a current ‘horror’ movie that has very little gore and blood and sadistic killings. I only think it’s rated R for the subject matter (it’s a variation on the morality play theme of horror movies) - there was very little swearing and has a pro-abstinence message.
 
I like foreign and independent films too, and romance, dramas mostly.
 
I like good, clean family comiedes. They don’t make many though. I really do like action movies, but the older I get the more I think my life is sorrowful enough without feeling pain watching a movie. LOL
 
Science fiction, horror, documentary, classic films (not really a genre, but…), westerns.

Beyond that, anything good.
 
Coming of age comedy or drama set in the very late 19th century through the 1940’s. How’s that for specific?

But My favorite movie, Good Will Hunting, breaks my rule so…

I love classic films - film noir, drama, comedy. In the US I think the best movies are from 1930-1970. I find a lot of movies today really boring and stupid - painful even, to watch. I avoid them like the plague. 🙂

I love foreign films - Bergman, Truffaut, Fellini. This winter I discovered Michelangelo Antonioni - L’Eclisse, L’Avventura, Red Desert, La Notte. He directed Blow Up too - another all time favorite. Great stuff.
 
As a self professed “Film Buff” I like most genre’s and I have formally studied filmmaking myself so I’m fascinated by everything tasteful and good.

As a guy raised in the 80s/90s though, I have to admit the Action genre is my favorite including the sub genres of “Sci-Fi Action”(The Matrix, Terminator, Star Trek), “Action Thriller”(The Fugitive, The Untouchables) and the Superhero films(Especially 1978’s classic first genre entry, Superman: The Movie and the Richard Donner director’s cut of Superman 2).

I like musicals such as Oliver and My Fair Lady.

And I am particularly fond of French films as well. I attended the French Film festival for about 6-7 years in a row(about 10 to 20 films each time). Favorite French films are Jean De Florette, the sequel Manon De Sources(one of the greatest sequels ever made), Cyrano De Bergerac(the Depardieu version), Three Colours White(the underrated one!), The Last Metro.
 
I love horror the best. Mysterious are good too. I’m not a huge fan of romantic comedies or science fiction. This is not really a genre, but I really hate all these super hero movies coming out lately. They’re all the same.
 
I forgot to mention to Hitchcock. One of my all time favorites. Rear Window and North by Northwest are his best I think.

Rear Window is one of my favorites! Jimmy Stewart, Grace Kelly, Thelma Ritter - great cast!

Yep. Of course, we’ve all seen it like 10 times, right. You have to take a break - 3, 4 years. I watched it again about a year ago. It was so great I turned around and watched it again, right then and there. Now THAT is a great movie. I think it is actually improving with time. Not a bad scene or line of dialogue in it.

I own the DVD so I usually watch it several times a year! Another Hitchcock film with Jimmy Stewart I like is Rope.

I am starting to buy DVDs. I didn’t before because I figured you would only watch them once. But in fact you do watch them again. I haven’t bought movies yet; I am doing TV series, Avengers, Poirot, Maigret. Just got Fawlty Towers.

Some of Hitchcock is a little too creepy for me - The Birds, Psycho. I don’t like those ones so much. I like the ones from the 50s. Notorious, Suspicion, Marnie, Vertigo. They are ok. And North by Northwest for me is right up there with Rear Window.
