Which is more important reading the Bible or Praying to God?

Which is more important reading the Bible or praying to God?

I would have thought prayer if one had to choose…Of course we don’t have to choose (thankfully) and Sacred Scripture is a fundamental part of faith!

since when i pray, i talk and God listen.
when i read the Bible, God talk and i listen.

Praying to God is more important than reading the bible…after all, blind people can’t read.

Which is why the protestant doctrine of sola scriptura is wrong.

What about the poeple in different countries where bibles aren’t printed, or the poor who can’t afford to purchase, or those who are illiterate?

I’m backwards- when I pray, I try to have God talk, and me listen (which I’m not so good at, but I’m trying), and when I read the Bible, it’s mostly me talking and God listening. As in, “You know God, how could you make such a well-read woman who is so dang hopeless at reading this Bible?” and “Well for Pete’s sake, God, I don’t understand what you’re getting at here at all. A lamb with seven horns?” 😉

I’ve never heard anyone who could manage that without prayer.

But even the illiterate haven’t usually been ignorant of scripture if they take their faith seriously - attend church often enough and you’re bound to hear a substantial portion of it.

I tend to find both prayer (of the kind where it’s me talking to God and the kind where I’m trying to listen to him) and scripture essential.

If, when you are reading the Bible you are reading it prayerfully, such as in Lectio Divina, then it is praying. And, we should be prayerfully reading it as a letter written by God directly to us.

There are also ways of reading the Bible just to get information, but not with prayerful intention.

The most beneficial way is the first way I mentioned.
 
I think I’ve personally grown much more in my faith through bible reading, more so than through prayer.

But I said both.

As Saint Isidore of Seville, Bishop and Doctor of the Church says in his Book of Maxims:

Prayer purifies us, reading instructs us. Both are good when both are possible. Otherwise, prayer is better than reading.

I personally believe that praying to God is more important than reading the Bible.
 
Praying the scriptures works for me.:highprayer:

Glad I don’t have to choose between the two, I need both.
 
Both are equally important to me. When I pray, I speak to God. When I read the Bible, He speaks to me. Of course, when I read Psalms, I am praying to Him also.

breathing. Likewise, a spirit is dead spiritually if one does not pray. Prayer gives us more of God’s grace and helps us to live a more holy life.
