The Orthodox Church says that the Catholics broke off from them, but us Catholics say that the Eastern Church broke off from us.

I’m so scared of being in the wrong religion.

Can anyone give any historical background to prove that the Catholic Church is the right one?

The Catholic Church is the correct church basically because of the Papacy. That’s the deciding factor.

yes, the Orthodox definitely insist they are the original church and the Catholics broke off from them. i am someone who joined the Catholic church 10 years ago at 56.
the Catholics believe Peter is the first Pope so the Orthodox must have believed that until the schism. there were other Popes until the schism that the Orthodox seemed to believe were leading the Church so that makes me think the Catholic church is the original church.

They claim apostolic succession too.

I’m just so scared that when I die I’ll find out I was wrong with the choice of my church and end up in hell.

Of all of the things to worry about, this is not one. Both are correct and valid Churches. Neither is the “wrong religion.”

Schism is a grave evil, but the people involved in the schism have been dead for a thousand years. We should all pray for a resumption of communion.

So say that one church’s Eucharist is real and the other is not.
Would we be safe from sin because of ignorance?

Would a God who would do that to you when you made this much effort to try and find the right path even be worthy of worship?

I mean the catechism says that there’s no salvation outside of the church. I don’t know if I agree with that but if that’s true then most people won’t make it to heaven.

Are you Catholic? If so, you should know that the Church teaches that the Eastern Orthodox have all seven valid sacraments.

Catechism
830 The word “catholic” means “universal,” in the sense of “according to the totality” or “in keeping with the whole.” The Church is catholic in a double sense:

First, the Church is catholic because Christ is present in her. "Where there is Christ Jesus, there is the Catholic Church."307 In her subsists the fullness of Christ’s body united with its head; this implies that she receives from him "the fullness of the means of salvation"308 which he has willed: correct and complete confession of faith, full sacramental life, and ordained ministry in apostolic succession. The Church was, in this fundamental sense, catholic on the day of Pentecost309 and will always be so until the day of the Parousia.

831 Secondly, the Church is catholic because she has been sent out by Christ on a mission to the whole of the human race:310
All men are called to belong to the new People of God. This People, therefore, while remaining one and only one, is to be spread throughout the whole world and to all ages in order that the design of God’s will may be fulfilled: he made human nature one in the beginning and has decreed that all his children who were scattered should be finally gathered together as one. . . . The character of universality which adorns the People of God is a gift from the Lord himself whereby the Catholic Church ceaselessly and efficaciously seeks for the return of all humanity and all its goods, under Christ the Head in the unity of his Spirit.311
307 St. Ignatius of Antioch, Ad Smyrn. 8,2:Apostolic Fathers,II/2,311.
308 UR 3; AG 6; Eph 1:22-23.
309 Cf. AG 4.
310 Cf. Mt 28:19.
311 LG 13 §§ 1-2; cf. Jn 11:52.

that is a very good question G2024, if both sides of a coin, say they are the correct form and back up their claim with their own created irrefutable proof, then which side of the coin do you choose. please let the world know when you figure that one out.

The true Church is the one God loves most.
How do we know which one - well those with clear minds and hearts will surely know from within.

Unfortunately nobody has perfectly clear minds and hearts (so no one sins if they are mistaken if they keep seeking a pure mind and heart). But at the macro level we would expect one Church to fare better than the other in the long term. Its hard to know how long the long term is going to be!

As a few others have said, Scripture and the writings of the early Church Fathers confirm that St. Peter and his successors are head of the Church, so the fact that the Orthodox have separated themselves is major.

There are also numerous verses in Scripture that state miracles would follow those that believe:

“And these signs shall follow them that believe: In my name they shall cast out devils: they shall speak with new tongues. They shall take up serpents; and if they shall drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them: they shall lay their hands upon the sick, and they shall recover.” Mark 16:17,18

“Otherwise believe for the very works’ sake. Amen, amen I say to you, he that believeth in me, the works that I do, he also shall do; and greater than these shall he do.” John 14:12

The Catholic Church has had continuous miracles throughout its entire history, starting with St. Peter raising Tabatha from the dead in Scripture, to all the miracles we see in the lives of the Saints, to the healings at Lourdes, to the miracle at Fatima, to the incorruptibles, the stigmata, Eucharistic miracles, etc. The Orthodox do not have these miracles - a sign they have separated from the truth.

Here’s an upper level question … go on the street and ask, “Who is the pope”

If they can provide an answer, it would be “Pope Francis”

Who is the pope of the eastern orthodox? What is his name? How long has he been in office? Can he trace his lineage back to St. Peter in the bible? Are there news stories of the Eastern Pope saying stuff like “there is no hell” or “divorced couples should receive communion”?

I’m a basic guy, start at the ground and work my way up. Turn back the clock, Christ is about to leave his ministry on earth. There’s twelve dudes there, maybe 11 at this exact moment, he turns to one of them and says “You are the leader of my church on earth”

Imagine the other 11 (or 10) dudes saying to themselves, “Yo! Hey! what about me? Why not me? Why can’t I be the one and only that is to lead your church?”

Not just the other apostles, but the hundreds, if not thousands, of disciples surrounding Jesus at the time.

Just a long history, Roman empire stuff, Constantinople, two lungs, roman ponitif displacement, political strife … lots and lots of stuff.

But, the funny thing is, Jesus said that his church would stand the test of time and the gates of hell would not prevail. There’s a lot more meaning to this, but suffice it to say that the Church Christ founded in AD33 is still the same church today, very rich and developed over time, but the essence of the faith is exactly the same.

not really, to me it sounds like Cruciferi is trying to live a holy life.

Gnosticism is one who believes that they can get to heaven on their own merit because they know so much.

All religions say they are right. If the Greeks didn’t think they were the true religion, the correct church if you will, why would they bother with the expense of it. Its sort of stupid to knowingly belong to a wrong religion.

BTW, if you spoke with Presbyterians, Methodists or Lutherans, they’d say they same thing- that they are right.
