Which is your favorite Hollywood film from the magical year of 1939?

I don’t know how old you were as a kid, but that is a long movie for a kid to sit through and sort of adult themes. Not exactly a movie a kid would enjoy. Now if it was at one of the Phoenix drive ins that would be different!!!

No, I was taken to see it (like, 4 or 5 times - my Mom loved that movie) at the old Cine Capri Theater on 24th Street and Camelback, during one of the periodic re-releases - during the early 1960s. I was pretty much stuck there, unlike a drive in where I could walk around or go to the playground under the screen. It was torture for me.

My folks were big into seeing movies and we probably went to the movies 2 - 3 times a week, but I got dragged to some stuff I never wanted to see. I remember the nadir being “Ash Wednesday,” with Elizabeth Taylor as the wealthy wife of James Robard who is getting a face lift in Gstaad to try to keep their marriage intact. Not the best film to make a squirrelly 9 year old sit through.

Ah yes! The Cine Capri. I remember it well.
 
“The Wizard of Oz” natch, although I would love to see “Only Angels Have Wings” again.
 
Well, it didn’t come out in 1939, but received Oscars that year, is “The Adventures of Robin Hood.” I have it and GWTW and of the two, I’d rather re-watch Robin Hood. It was Errol Flynn’s best picture bar none. Everyone was perfectly cast from the radiant Olivia de Haviland as Main Marian to the masterful Basil Rathbone as Sir Guy of Gisborne… A beautiful film with everything a good film should have, especially heart.

And it was Joan Fontaine who played opposite Orson Welles in “Jane Eyre.” I have that on DVD, as well. 🙂

I think that version of Robin Hood was just on tv the other night. It looked good.

I have both Jane Eyre and Rebecca on DVD as well as GWTW.
