Hi, Please excuse my ignorance of the Roman faith with my following question.

I always here of the “Old Tridentine” mass of the Roman rite Catholic church. Didn’t this come about around the time of the Council of Trent? Which Mass was in use before that?

Is there any articles on the net which timeline what Mass (or Masses) the Roman Church used in the Early centuries of the church?

Thankyou for your answers.

God bless.

I am not really an expert of this, but as far as I understand it the Council of Trent called for the codification of the Mass as it existed at the time. That is to say, it called for it to be set down.

Equally, the “Tridentine” Mass has evolved and changed between then and now. The substance is essentially the same, but the last typical edition was in 1962, and the last revision just a few weeks ago…

The reason I’m saying this is that I’m chancing a guess that you’re asking because you may have heard objections to the “Old Mass” on the basis that we are stuck in the 16th Century, when there were earlier Masses, and developments after that. But, as you can see, the argument is vaguely specious.

If I can please recommend to you The Short History of the Roman Mass, as it may assist.

God bless,
Mark
