I started learning how to do the Billings Method this month, but because of certain medications I take, my instructor thinks it may be messing with my results. (Don’t want to get graphic here).

She suggested I may want to try the sympto-thermal method where you take the temperature, etc. Does anyone have experience with this method?

My wife and I use sympto-thermal. Couple to Couple League is the particular one we use, and it’s been fairly straight forward after getting the hang of it. You’ll notice we have 4 young-uns…but I assure you that none were the result of any flaw in the method… 😉

I love sympto-thermal. I set my alarm for 4 or 5 am (changes every few months), wake up enough to stick therm. in my mouth, take it out when it beeps, and fall back asleep. I look at it and record when I actually wake up later on in the morning.

I found that worked best for me- I tend to wake slowly otherwise, and don’t “catch” myself in the sleepy period quickly enough otherwise. I get a VERY consistent reading this way.

I used to use “Taking Charge of Your Fertility” all the time- great reference. I’ve just not needed to double-check anything lately 🙂 I’ve used this for 6 years, and becoming pregnant.

Oh, I should mention, I’m wanting to use it as a form of birth control, NOT to get pregnant. 🙂

We’ve used the SymptoThermal Method for decades, to prevent and to achieve pregnancy. It works.

We use the rules from 20 years ago, because they are what we’ve been using all along. I don’t know about the current rules.

We use this method and I’ve used couple to couple league text books and classes.

I enjoy this method and it works well for me. We’ve been using it for about a year to achieve and to prevent. It’s worked quite well.

Even with an infant and getting up in the middle of the night…I’ve had no issue temping. I recommend it.

There are specific rules to follow. You can even use just temping and no mucus detection as a rule…you’ll just have to wait a fourth day after peak instead of three days with mucus detection and temperature rise. It’s a rule designed for the possibility of medications or yeast infections that can cloud mucus detection.

Billings works great for us, but probably because my wife has no medical conditions that affect mucus nor does she even like taking cold meds. If you think your meds might affect mucus, it’s probably time to look further into another method.

I haven’t used it, but you might look into Marquette. They use a fertility monitor. We were planning to start in October, but God had other plans and now we plan to have a baby in June!

I use Creighton model. But if you’re having trouble with Billings, I imagine you’d have similar trouble with Creighton (since it, too, is based only on the mucus sign).

Besides sympto-thermal, you also might want to look into the Marquette model.
