A recent thread about appropriate and inappropriate book for teens got me thinking about some other controversial books. So for experiment, I would like to ask which of the two books would you pick among these two choice.
  • Lolita
  • Atlas Shrugged

And I will be honest… Atlas Shrugged. It’s not that bad – in fact it’s like reading NAB without any verse number.

Does it have to be one of those? I read Lolita and was not impressed: basically glamorizing child rape with witty, poetical prose.
Atlas Shrugged is described as "The narrative seems to be: “Nobody understands me or agrees with my worldview because I’m so superior to them all.”
With the millions of worthwhile books in the world, why not find a couple of good ones? Huckleberry Finn, The Lord of the Rings, King Arthur, Great Expectations, 1984, The Secret Garden, Jane Eyre and so on.

Neither. “Atlas Shrugged” presents an anti-Catholic, anti-Christian worldview as noble. I read “Fountainhead” as a teen and it took me years to un-learn the ways it deformed my thinking.

I’ve never read “Lolita” however I understand the outline of the book.

Yes, I am going with these two books, even though I can replace Lolita with any books that are also "smut disguised as literary ‘great’ "

I just don’t get what is wrong with Atlas Shrugged, but I put it there because many dislike it, complaining about it, when they know America is great precisely because of this book. It’s perfectly Christian. we have seen its first fruit now, but we haven’t let the fruit blossom yet. This book was what kept me anchored to faith when I was drifting away from God.

The other reason I pick these two is that, in a public school system, they are far more likely to pick Lolita, and will question you if you go with Atlas Shrugged.

Ann Rynd was an atheist and her writing glamorized atheism and she coined the heresy of objectivism.

Well, I would go with another “smut disguised as literary great”, since almost anything would be better than a book normalizing pedophilia. And I really can’t see that Ayn Rand is responsible for making America great. Surely many factors have played into the country’s success.
