This is sheer curiosity and someone briefly referenced it in another thread, so I thought I’d get some opinions here.

The question is pretty simple: Given the two options, as they exist today, which would you feel more comfortable attending:

A. An Eastern Orthodox Service
B. Mass at an SSPX Chapel

The purpose of this thread is merely to gauge initial reactions - which option (if any) is further outside/closer to your “comfort” zone?

I would say probably a Mass at an SSPX chapel - I’ve tried EO (before converting) and the ethnic differences were all too obvious and kept me from worshipping Him.

I’m not Catholic, but it’s an interesting thought. I’d go to the Orthodox service. I think the SSPX want to have their cake and eat it too- that is, that their position is self-contradictory.

There are variations within the Orthodox community which some of the ethnic issues are not as pronounced. Personally, I would feel more comfortable with the Eastern Orthodox in that we are assured of the validity of the sacrament. With the SSPX, we are uncertain. It is interesting to think that the longer the SSPX issue is not resolved or unity achieved, the more uncertain of the validity of orders.

Why would these be the only two options? Where is the possibility of a Catholic Mass at either FSSP, N.O., or Tridentine Mass via the recent motu proprio?

The reason why I have only these two choices would probably impact my decision.

Sorry, I don’t know what SSPX means? I do understand Eastern Orthodox. 🙂

The SSPX is the Society of Saint Pius X. Pope Saint Pius X was the pontiff around the turn of the 20th century. The Society has had questionable and controversial canonical status within the Church for years.

The Vatican has never denied the VALIDITY of the SSPX sacrament (I assume you mean the Eucharist) nor the validity of orders. And with what I know of canon law, both the SSPX and Eastern Orthodox Mass do fulfill your Sunday obligation.

I think Catholics are allowed to receive Eucharist at an SSPX service if that is the only option? Whereas the OC would not allow a Catholic to receive. So that might well be an issue for a Catholic choosing a service.

I have been to several Russian Orthodox services. They are completely different from anything I am used to, but I would be more comfortable there because I know that they are within their own tradition. Since I wouldn’t receive the Eucharist at either choice, that wouldn’t matter.

For the poster who asked why there were only two options listed:

The reason you don’t see FSSP, Maronite, Ruthenian, etc on the list is that most Catholics don’t consider their position vis a vis Rome to be controversial.

I posted this poll because on this forum at least, most posters have at least some awareness of the basics of what each group is about. The question is simply is which of the two options you be most “comfortable” attending (a subjective question). It doesn’t have to a be a theological dissertation - just a gut instinct. 😉

So far, it seems the informal poll is favoring Eastern Orthodox? Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.

OC will allow aCatholic to take communion as long as you speak to the priest first. I would definately go to EO. They haven’t pushed false ideas like the SSPX has! Anyone who thinks JPII was the WORST Pope needs to have their heads checked!

Also, I noticed some questions regarding validity so, I should probably add that the sacraments of both the Eastern Orthodox and SSPX are valid. Also keep in mind that we’re talking about the Eastern Orthodox Church not Eastern Rite Catholics.

A few additional facts:

Issues between the Orthodox Church and Rome occurred around 1054 or so.
Issues between the SSPX and Rome occurred around the mid-1960’s or so.

Practically, this means that the Orthodox reject the councils after 1054.
The SSPX reject portions of the Second Vatican Council documents.

Eastern Orthodox Divine Liturgy. 👍

Of course, I’m naturally biased. 🙂

I’m fairly sure that attending an Eastern Orthodox Divine Liturgy does not fulfill the Sunday obligation of a Catholic. However, the obligation is fulfilled if the Divine Liturgy is at an Eastern Catholic parish.

This would be very controversial. many priests would never allow it, any more than a Catholic priest would a Protestant, and for the same reason. Even in an emergency, it would be unlikely.

I’ve seen and read that that is very true!

Eastern Orthodox: Schismatics for centuries

SSPX: Told we can attend their Masses, told we can receive Holy Communion there, both without sin. Are not in schism, since the lifting of the excommunications at least, have a valid Communion. Are in a controversial, irregular standing with Rome, do, in my opinion, need to get some of their severe obedience orders under control, but all this combines to make them a slightly renegade, but Catholic, religious order.

I’d attend SSPX.

Could anyone imagine if someone responded by saying “Well doctrinally I’m way closer to the Orthodox, so I’d have to say I’d go to mass at an SSPX Chapel”
Pretty silly line of reasoning I'd say, yet turn it around and for some it seems to be a logical argument.
