Which of the following would you feel most comfortable attending?

SSPX. I have been to one of their Rosary prayers; and will be attending my first SSPX mass this Sunday out of necessity (I live under Roger Mahoney of Century City). I consider SSPX more Catholic than the ‘regular’ churches around here with gay priests and female alter boys. Just bought a Douay-Rheims Bible this week- may have to change my handle from SSPXwannaB to SSPXdood.

Eastern Orthodox are not Catholic. Eastern Catholic Rites are Catholic, sometimes called “Orthodox in Communion with Rome”. Is that what you’re referring to?

You got me there. I haven’t attended any of them in my lifetime. But I would suspect the old Orthodox rites which were valid before the schism are still valid now. The Byzantine Rites I know about.

The question is pretty simple: Given the two options, as they exist today, which would you feel more comfortable attending:

A. An Eastern Orthodox Service
B. Mass at an SSPX Chapel

My gut reaction would be neither, but with a little more thought it’d be the Eastern Orthodox Service.

Why pick a schismatic and heretic Mass over a Catholic one? The SSPX believes and professes all the truths of the Church and celebrates Mass has it has been for hundreds of years!

Why would you, a Catholic, choose to go to a service where they openly deny dogmas of the Church?

Maybe you disagree with the SSPX and their position. Fine, I can see why one wouldn’t support their irregular canonical structure. But then how can you reconcile the Orthodox’s open schism and heretical beliefs?

Maybe people are uncomfortable because they feel they may have to have coffee and spend time chatting afterwards, I don’t know. The way I understand it, if you just go for the Mass, you fulfill your obligation. If there are any extra-curricular activities you wish to participate in, like disrespect the local bishop or engage in anti-Novus Ordo discussions after Mass, then you’re asking for trouble. You definitely don’t have to stick around for that.

Definitely the SSPX. I haven’t done so yet even though I have one in my area that is closer to my home than my NO parish. I can’t stand the lack of reverence and belief in the Real Presence that is so obviously prevalent by my fellow parishoners. I haven’t yet gone because I’m really trying very hard to stay obedient to Rome, but it gets harder every week…oh well, for now I’ll just keep on “Offering It Up” and pray for some common sense to come out of the Detroit Archdiocesan Office. So far, they’ve pretty well ignored opening up TLM except for some few parishes at hard to get to locations and at hard to attend to times for ones such as I who have to work on weekends!

I’m confused by your response. What beliefs exactly do Orthodox hold that are heretical? We have the same faith as before the schism. Don’t you have to add to the faith or take away from it to be a heretic?
