Fornication or Pornography?

–
BB
Both can be grave sins…

*Fornication—Fornication is carnal union between an unmarried man and an unmarried woman and is a grave sin (CCC 2353). St. Paul condemns fornication in his epistle 1 Corinthians 6:18. All aspects of intimate contact associated with the marriage act also constitute fornication for Jesus said, “I say to you, everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart” (Matthew 9:28). If lustful looks are adulterous, how much worse is lustful physical contact?
Pornography—Pornography is the display of intimate real or simulated sexual acts to a third party. Because it removes the marriage act from within the sacramental sanctity of marriage, and perverts sex, it is gravely contrary to charity (CCC 2354). The display of pornography to children and other parties is especially gravely sinful because it is gravely scandalous.

Theologically, both are mortal sins and incur the same guilt.

Practically, it’s not very cut-and-dry. Fornication makes two people guilty, but pornography poisons one’s mind and is often a “gateway” sin.

But there are probably some guilty parties that made the porn…that would take the number of guilty people up to 3 or many more…

Both are grave sins. If entered into with free will and full knowledge, both are choices to separate oneself from God. Both are choices to kill the life of grace in one’s soul. Unrepented, either can be a choice to eternal separation, i.e., damnation.

Both are against the virtue if charity, as they USE others. But I think it can be argued that in some circumstances, fornication, while still USE, can be mistaken for love. It can be argued that in some cases of fornication, the sheer disregard for the dignity of the human person is NOT present.

Jesus said some demons can only be cast out through prayer and fasting. I believe pornography is one of those demons. So in that regard too, it’s worse.

In terms of the temporal consequences (i.e. the consequences here on earth) the two sins are similar, although the immediate risks from a single act of fornication are greater that the immediate risks from a single act of looking at pornography.

Eternal consequences: both separate you from Gods love, and put your immortal soul at grave risk.

Immediate and temporal consequences:
Both are habit forming, and that habit can lead you to believe that they are not wrong or “not that bad” - leading you to greater sin.
Both interfere with your ability to hold proper respect for the dignity of members of the opposite sex.

Porn: Requires other people to have committed acts of fornication or adultry to obtain the immages
Those people - especially the women may have been mistreated abused or coerced into taking the role.
in many countries money in the porn industries is linked to other crimes.
Regular use of porn is going to distort your personal sexual tastes away from what is normal and healthy to what looks desirable on camera - these are not really the same thing.

Your money could be better spent elsewhere.
Porn is addictive. It is a sin to allow yourself to be enslaved. Addiction is a form of slavery.

Fornication. You run the risk of loosing your health or well-being by catching a serious disease. these risks are high. If you have ever committed this act before you risk spreading these diseases which you might not know you are carrying.
You therefore may be giving your sexual partner a life threatening disease or one with could destroy their fertility or other aspects of their life.

you run the risk of the female person becoming pregnant with an unplanned baby. - That is bad for her. Bad for the baby and bad for our society.
If that baby is then aborted you are an accessory to their murder. - whether or not you agreed to the abortion.

You leave yourself and your partner wide open to unnessicary heartbreak - which can be devastating.

The use of some types of contraceptive techniques *reduces * (but does not remove)the risks of some of these issues, but introduces more additional moral issues.

The people producing porn are opening themselves to all the above risks due to fornication plus additional ones.
