This was God’s Shekinah Glory. It is the Triune God (Father, Word, Holy Spirit) – ALL of God. He appeared as a cloud (for it was impossible for mere man to see the “face” of God and live). It was a divine visitation of the presence or dwelling of JEHOVAH God on this earth. We see examples of this when Moses went up to Mt Sinai, Ex. 33:9-20. Also Ex 13:20 -22 when God led the Israelites out of Egypt and EX 14:24-25.

As to the Second Temple there is a related Patristic comment. Theophylact says in the Catena Aurea, refering to the Veil of the Temple being rent at the death of Christ, that it was the grace of the Holy Spirit especially which left the place.

Theophylact: Again, God by the rending of the veil implied that the grace of the Holy Spirit goes away and is rent from the temple, so that the Holy of holies might be seen by all; [ed. note: The sense of the passage by reference to Theophylact appears to be, that as the Jews used to rend their clothes as a sign of grief, so the temple by the rending of its veil might be said to mourn.] also that the temple will mourn amongst the Jews, when they shall deplore their calamities, and rend their clothes.

Okay! I wonder how Israel understood the concept of God dwelling in the Temple. If he’s in the Temple, did they also believe he was in Heaven at the same time?

The Jewish tradition holds to the Shekinah Glory of God. His holy presence was there (Holy of Holies in the sanctuary), just as we now have, through Jesus, in the Eucharist, the presence of God in the person of Jesus at all our Masses throughout the world. God is everywhere - He cannot be separated, yet His holy Presence can be made manifest through, in the Old Testament, His Shekinah Glory, and in the New Testament (age) the Eucharist.

So Holy was God’s Shekinah presence that only once a year, was the High Priest permitted into the actual presence, and before doing that the High Priest had to go through extreme cleansing protocols and he tied a long rope around his waist before entering, so that should he be struck dead, the others outside could retrieve his body.
